Le site de Cysoing est à considérer comme une installation de dimension réduite dont la nature ne semble que peu différer des occupations rurales à vocation domestique connues pour l’époque dans la région. Ainsi l’implantation se caractérise par la présence de structures de combustion, d’excavations parfois liées au stockage des grains, de cabanes semi-excavées et de probables bâtiments sur poteaux. Seule une construction sur fondation en pierre ainsi qu’un probable bâtiment sur tranchée de fondation aménagée de poteaux se distinguent du corpus habituel des structures de la période. L’habitat alto-médiéval investit les ruines d’une villa antique. La localisation des vestiges dans l’emprise de bâtiments plus anciens n’est pas fortuite, les occupants ayant opportunément profité des avantages que pouvait procurer une construction en pierre, même en grande partie ruinée. On notera encore la détermination d’une petite activité domestique liée au travail de l’os et plus précisément à la fabrication de peignes.
La fouille de l’habitat mérovingien, rue Emile Pierronne à Neuville-sur-Escaut, avait porté sur 8 809 m 2 . Elle est située à 200 m d’une nécropole mérovingienne fouillée dans les années soixante-dix. Appréhendé en partie, cet habitat a livré douze fonds de cabane, cinq fosses et près de 200 empreintes de poteaux mais un seul bâtiment est attesté avec certitude. Hormis une implantation tributaire de la topographie des lieux, aucune organisation spaciale particulière n’a été dégagée. On notera l’absence de fossé, de puits à eau, de four domestique ou de silo. Il s’agit d’un habitat à vocation agricole (élevage du bétail pour le travail des champs et pour l’exportation de viande) associé à un petit artisanat comme la métallurgie (présence de scories) ou le textile (fragments de pesons, fusaïole, broche de tisserand). Tout comme sa nécropole, l’habitat mérovingien a une durée d’occupation courte et il est probablement abandonné dans le courant du vi e s.
