Resumo Estudos detalhados de fáceis sedimentares e empilhamento estratigráfico de 12 seções em minas e corte de estrada, ao longo de um perfil de 80,5 km, conduziram ao reconhecimento de 11 fácies sedimentares da Formação Sete Lagoas, 2 fácies do Conglomerado Carrancas e 3 fácies na porção basal da Formação Serra de Santa Helena. Essas fácies compõem 9 associações de fácies, as quais correspondem ao registro de 3 seqüências deposicionais. As seqüências estratigráficas descritas são caracterizadas por tratos de sistema transgressivo e mar alto, com preservação secundária de um trato de sistema de mar baixo. Duas das três seqüências reconhecidas estão associadas à sucessão carbonática da Formação Sete Lagoas, enquanto a última seqüência, sobreposta aos carbonatos, corresponde ao registro siliciclástico da Formação Serra de Santa Helena. A distribuição estratigráfica das associações de fácies revela uma transição de ambientes de águas rasas a Oeste da área estudada para ambientes de águas mais profundas em direção a Leste. Um modelo de rampa carbonática, mostrando os diferentes estágios de evolução das seqüências, é apresentado como proposta de interpretação para os dados faciológicos e estratigráficos obtidos para os depósitos da Formação Sete Lagoas na região homônima e proximidades.

Top marine predators present high mercury concentrations in their tissues as consequence of biomagnification of the most toxic form of this metal, methylmercury (MeHg). The present study concerns mercury accumulation by Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis), highlighting the selenium-mediated methylmercury detoxification process. Liver samples from 19 dolphins incidentally captured within Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) from 1994 to 2006 were analyzed for total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), total organic mercury (TOrgHg) and selenium (Se). X-ray microanalyses were also performed. The specimens, including from fetuses to 30-year-old dolphins, comprising 8 females and 11 males, presented high THg (0.53–132 µg/g wet wt.) and Se concentrations (0.17–74.8 µg/g wet wt.). Correlations between THg, MeHg, TOrgHg and Se were verified with age (p<0.05), as well as a high and positive correlation was observed between molar concentrations of Hg and Se (p<0.05). Negative correlations were observed between THg and the percentage of MeHg contribution to THg (p<0.05), which represents a consequence of the selenium-mediated methylmercury detoxification process. Accumulation of Se-Hg amorphous crystals in Kupffer Cells was demonstrated through ultra-structural analysis, which shows that Guiana dolphin is capable of carrying out the demethylation process via mercury selenide formation.

Global Neoproterozoic glaciations are related to extreme environmental changes and the reprise of iron formation in the rock record. However, the lack of narrow age constraints on Cryogenian successions bearing iron-formation deposits prevents correlation and understanding of these deposits on a global scale. Our new multiproxy data reveal a long Cryogenian record for the Jacadigo Group (Urucum District, Brazil) spanning the Sturtian and Marinoan ice ages. Deposition of the basal sequence of the Urucum Formation was influenced by Sturtian continental glaciation and was followed by a transgressive interglacial record of &gt;600 m of carbonates that terminates in a glacioeustatic unconformity. Overlying this, there are up to 500 m of shale and sandstone interpreted as coeval to global Marinoan glacial advance. Glacial outwash delta deposits at the top of the formation correlate with diamictite-filled paleovalleys and are covered by massive Fe and Mn deposits of the Santa Cruz Formation and local carbonate. This second transgression is related to Marinoan deglaciation. Detrital zircon provenance supports glaciostatic control on Cryogenian sedimentary yield at the margins of the Amazon craton. These findings reveal the sedimentary response to two marked events of glacioeustatic incision and transgression, culminating in massive banded iron deposition during the Marinoan cryochron.
