A pandemia do Coronavirus, provocada pelo vírus SAR-COV-2, possui sua gênese de transmissão aos humanos nos mercados da cidade de Wuhan, província de Hubei, na China, ocasionada, até onde se sabe, através do consumo de animais silvestres infectados. Concentrando cerca de 629 milhões de casos e mais de 6 milhões de mortos, a Covid-19, como ficou conhecida, é a maior pandemia do século até 2020. Após a identificação do primeiro caso, no final de 2019, diversos países tomaram medidas de quarentena, isolamento e distanciamento social, com o intuito de evitar a transmissão comunitária e gerar a supressão da doença. Na batalha travada contra o patógeno, alguns países apresentaram melhores resultados – como a China, Coréia do Sul e Alemanha –, enquanto outros, como o Brasil e Estados Unidos, sofreram veementemente com um alto número de casos e de óbitos. O presente trabalho consiste em uma pesquisa bibliográfica, qualitativa, analítica, aplicada e comparada. Neste artigo, procura-se analisar o desenvolvimento da doença e a efetividade das medidas adotadas para seu combate no Brasil, assim como a relação entre as diretrizes estabelecidas e a manutenção dos direitos fundamentais básicos e da democracia. Por fim, a visar a persitência do patógeno ou novas crises provocadas por outros vírus, objetiva também conjeturar a possibilidade de uma melhor forma de combate a pandemias.
