Der Autor legt dar, wie juristische und theologische Debatten über den Charakter der heiligen Offenbarung, über Wesen und Funktion von Sprache und über die Intentionen des Übersetzens zur Entfaltung einer persischen Text-und Kommentartradition des Korans beitrugen. Erfasst wird der Zeitraum zwischen dem 2./8. und dem 7./13. Jahrhundert, also rund ein halbes Jahrtausend.Die Untersuchung ist in eine Einleitung und zwei Teile gegliedert. Der erste Teil bezieht sich auf die arabische Szene und die dort angesiedelten Debatten um die Koranübersetzung, während sich der zweite mit dem persischen Umfeld befasst und in repräsentativen Beispielen die Entwicklung der einheimischen Koranhermeneutik aufzeigt. Entsprechend ist der erste Teil eher theoretisch, der zweite eher praktisch ausgerichtet. Eine abschliessende Zusammenfassung referiert die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Studie.Die Einleitung hinterfragt zunächst die vor allem im Westen oft kolportierte Überzeugung, eine Übersetzung des Korans in andere Sprachen sei innerhalb der islamischen Tradition grundsätzlich verboten gewesen. Der Autor zeigt dabei schlüssig auf, wie gut sich diese letztlich in antiislamischer christlicher Polemik wurzelnde Haltung in eine Sicht des Islams als autoritäre, von den Gläubigen blinden Gehorsam fordernde Religion fügte. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt der Einleitung bildet die Darlegung, welche Funktion die frühen persischen Interlinearübersetzungen koranischer Passagen erfüllten: die Bedeutung des Offenbarungstextes einem weiteren Kreis von Gläubigen zugänglich zu machen, nicht aber dessen arabischen Wortlaut zu ersetzen.In beiden Teilen der Untersuchung wird das Thema ‚nichtarabischer' Koran unter einer Vielzahl von Aspekten erörtert. Sichtbar wird so ein äusserst komplexes Beziehungsgeflecht ganz verschiedener Faktoren, die die Entstehung dieses Phänomens beeinflusstenunter steter Berücksichtigung des historischen Kontextes. Aus dem überreichen Material können im folgenden nur einige Stichworte herausgegriffen werden.Für die arabisch geführte Diskussion über die Übersetzbarkeit des Korans von zentraler Bedeutung sind die frühen diesbezüglichen juristischen Debatten.
