Sediment distribution patterns of riparian zones reflect the deposition dynamics and the type of deposition event. The purpose of this study is to characterize the morphology and distribution of sediments deposited in a restored riparian forest that were transported from adjacent areas cropped with sugar-cane. In order to study the deposition processes in a riparian forest located in the county of Iracemápolis state of São Paulo, Brazil, soil samples were collected on a transect for micromorphological as well as particle size distribution analyses, using Folk & Ward statistical parameters. Soil samples were dispersed with NaOH + sodium hexametaphosphate and water. The dispersion in water was made to simulate field transport conditions. Particle size distributions together with field and laboratory morphological analyses showed an irregular and non-uniform sediment deposition. This deposition process suggests the occurrence of high intensity erosive events that produce high amount of sediments and runoff characterized by a turbulent flow. The land use change in the riparian area marks the change in the preferential deposition location, which when sugar-cane dominated, corresponded to the alluvial plain and, after the restoration and development of the riparian forest, was dislocated 27 m upslope within the first few meters from the border of the forest.
Sediment morphology and distribution in a reforested riparian zone Agricultural pratices in the state of São Paulo-Brazil, are directly responsible for the suppression of the natural vegetation cover and soil degradation. The natural vegetation was substituted by coffee, pastures, citrus and sugar-cane crops, over centuries of occupation and land use. The native forest recuperation prevents soil erosion and reduces environmental impacts. Riparian forest traps sediments transported by "splash" and runoff. Sediments deposition in riparian zone depends on rainfall, geomorphology, original soil characteristics and management. Sediment distribution paths in riparian zones reflect the deposition dynamics and the type of deposition event. In order to study the deposition processes in a riparian forest located in the county of Iracemapolis-state of São Paulo, macro and micromorphological analyses, as well as particle size distribution using Folk & Ward (1957) parameters, were done. Soil samples were dispersed with sodium hexametaphosphate and water. This last technique was done to simulate field transport conditions. The particle size distribution results together with the field and laboratory morphological analyses showed an irregular and non-uniform sediment deposition. This deposition process suggests the occurrence of high intensity erosive events that produce high amount of sediments and runoff characterized by a turbulent flow. Land use changes significantly affect this type of deposition. The recuperation of the natural forest dislocated sediment deposition inside the riparian forest 25 m upslope.
Water erosion on cultivated soil and soil under riparian forestAbstract -The objective of this work was to identify attributes of soil and of sediments as a tool to determine the impacts from water erosion, as well as to propose reducing the overuse of the soil in the Cerrado, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Soils and sediments from the riparian forest of the Ponte Nova Stream and from upstream soybean crop areas were evaluated by micromorphometrics as to morphology, particle size, and porosity. Rhodic Oxisol was present in the cultivated hillside, and Petroferric Oxisol and Typic Eutraquox, in the riparian forest path. Soils and sediments were predominantly clayed, and the clay fraction was naturally aggregated into larger particles of silt and sand sizes. Analyses of morphological atributes, particle size, and porosity -by micromorphometrics -allowed to distinguish the sediment of buried soils by color, texture, and porosity differentiation. The high concentration of sandy-sized clay aggregates in Typic Eutraquox suggests the selective removal of fine particles, indicating soil erosion under the riparian forest. The high sediment deposition on the riparian forest soils is a risk to the soil filter function, and also to the perpetuity and regeneration of the forest because of the burial of seeds and seedlings.
Satellite remote sensing systems are widely used in environmental studies for providing regional scale analyses with high temporal resolution. On the other hand, when local small scale spatial studies based on very high resolution data at specific moments are involved, unmanned aerial vehicles have been alternatively adopted. The present case study aimed to carry out the morphometric analysis and quantify the soil loss in two sinkholes located in Oxisol on carbonate rocks of the Paranoá Group, in an agricultural area of Niquelândia, Goiás state, Brazil, using unmanned aerial vehicle, in two periods. From the analyzed satellite images, it was estimated that the emergence period of the sinkholes was between December 2018 and April 2019. Based on the aerial survey carried out, 35.53 m2 of eroded area and 236.89 metric tons of soil loss were observed for the sinkhole 1, as well 299.96 m2 of area and 663.47 metric tons of loss in the first period and 961.66 m2 of area and 4,241.68 metric tons of loss after six months for the sinkhole 2.
