A nutrição exerce grande influência sobre a reprodução dos animais. Nesse sentido, esta revisão tem a proposta de apresentar e discutir resultados de alguns trabalhos relacionados à influência da nutrição proteica e nitrogenada sobre aspectos reprodutivos em fêmeas bovinas em pastejo. Com o aumento no desempenho animal (produção de carne e leite), há um acréscimo na demanda por nutrientes. O aumento nas exigências nutricionais associado à baixa ingestão de nutrientes pode afetar as funções reprodutivas. A subnutrição durante o período seco e início do pós-parto resulta na mobilização lipídica e proteica com consequente aumento da incidência de doenças metabólicas, redução na taxa de concepção e maior período de serviço. No entanto, a superalimentação pode aumentar a taxa de excreção dos hormônios esteroides (progesterona ou estradiol), acarretando em ocorrência de subestro e diminuição da taxa de concepção. O fornecimento de proteína degradável no rúmen, proteína não degradável no rúmen e nitrogênio não proteico têm, em diversas situações, resultado em incremento nos índices reprodutivos em bovinos leiteiros e de corte.
O sistema de produção de animais confinados é uma excelente estratégia para períodos de escassez alimentar e falta de espaço. Em confinamentos, são utilizadas dietas extremamente concentradas e com altos níveis de carboidrato de rápida digestão. Essa revisão foi realizada com objetivo de abordar o efeito das dietas de confinamento sobre a população bacteriana ruminal de bovinos confinados. Bactérias ruminais respondem rapidamente às alterações dietéticas, tendo em vista que se reproduzem em intervalos menores que 60 minutos. O tempo de colonização das bactérias ruminais indica a velocidade que os microrganismos aderem e penetram no alimento. Os microrganismos ruminais podem associar-se ou aderir-se às partículas dos alimentos em diferentes tempos. O tamanho de partícula dos alimentos é um dos fatores importantes para a degradação, visto que determina a superfície de ataque para os microrganismos e influencia diretamente no tempo de colonização do alimento. Existe uma relação linear entre o tamanho corporal dos animais e a taxa de ruminação, evidenciando que está relacionada ao tamanho do rúmen ou do trato digestivo com o peso corporal dos animais. Protocolos de adaptação de restrição e de escada são os mais utilizados pelos nutricionistas de bovinos de corte confinados. A inclusão de aditivos e probióticos é uma estratégia válida para melhorar o aproveitamento, desde que seja usada em níveis adequados. Para minimizar os efeitos negativos das alterações nas dietas é necessário adaptar de forma gradativa a microbiota ruminal, seja pelos protocolos de adaptação por escada ou por restrição. Ambos os protocolos normalmente melhoram a saúde e maximizam o desempenho dos animais com 14 dias de adaptação.
