Este artigo apresenta a metodologia de ensino aplicada na disciplina Laboratório de Projeto III do curso de graduação de Engenharia de Sistemas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Durante a disciplina, os alunos desenvolvem um projeto complexo com base em um caso de estudo, desde sua concepção até a implementação de um protótipo funcional. Para tal, os alunos aplicam conceitos de Engenharia de Requisitos, e empregam mapas conceituais e máquinas de estado finito para obter uma visão holística do projeto, cujo desenvolvimento é gerenciado através das metodologias Scrum e Kanban de gestão ágil. O caso de estudo apresentado consiste na construção de um guindaste automático, integrando conteúdos de mecânica e modelagem 3D, eletroeletrônica e software. Durante a execução do projeto, são utilizados software gratuito e hardware livre para a implementação de um protótipo em escala de baixo custo, viabilizando o emprego da metodologia didática proposta em outras universidades e instituições de ensino públicas do País.
