Objetivou-se com este trabalho caracterizar três solos da Baixada Cuiabana, que pertencem a uma região de solo saprolítico, utilizando-se das classificações clássicas: HRB e USCS, e as classificações de solos tropicais: MCT e Método Expedito, proposto por Nogami e Villibor, e então compará-las. Para tal, realizouse a coleta de três amostras e procedeu-se com os respectivos ensaios de caracterização: granulometria, massa aparente dos grãos, limite de liquidez, limite de plasticidade, e os ensaios do mini-MCV, perda de massa por imersão e o Método Expedito. Constatou-se que pelos limites de Atterberg as três amostras apresentaram pouca plasticidade, embora duas delas tenham apresentado plasticidade ao se realizar os ensaios. No que tange à curva granulométrica dos solos, notou-se um aumento significativo da fração de finos ao se realizar o ensaio de sedimentação com e sem defloculante. E, por fim, identificou-se uma divergência entre as classificações de cada amostra dos solos analisados de acordo com as metodologias empregadas. Neste sentido, verifica-se a importância da realização de ensaios da metodologia MCT para a classificação de solos tropicais, a fim de se conhecer melhor seu comportamento hidromecânico. Os resultados obtidos pelas metodologias clássicas não se mostraram condizentes com o comportamento dos solos, conforme os ensaios laboratoriais, ao passo que a metodologia MCT apresentou resultados mais coerentes com o seu comportamento.
Este trabalhou tem por objetivo analisar a resistência ao cisalhamento na interação entre um solo característico da região de Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, e um geotêxtil tecido. Foram realizados os ensaios de caracterização do solo da região seguindo as normas em vigência (análise granulométrica, limite de liquidez, limite de plasticidade, determinação da massa específica e compactação). Os ensaios de tração do geotêxtil tecido foram realizados no laboratório de geossintéticos da Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos. Para a análise da interação entre o solo e o geotêxtil foram realizados ensaios de cisalhamento direto, na velocidade de 0,3mm/min, de forma adaptada em um equipamento circular, sob as tensões confinantes de 30 kPa, 65 kPa e 100 kPa. Como resultado, a envoltória de resistência do solo apresentou ângulo de atrito de 27,74º e coesão de 31,14 kPa e foi comparada com a envoltória de resistência da interface do solo com o geossintético, que apresentou uma redução nas propriedades de ângulo de atrito de interface e adesão, 15,19º e 28,35 kPa, respectivamente. Como esperado, quanto maior a tensão confinante, maior a resistência ao cisalhamento. Os ensaios de cisalhamento direto se apresentaram como uma forma eficaz de obtenção dos parâmetros de resistência de interface solo-geotêxtil. No entanto, algumas ressalvas quanto ao efeito escalam devem ser consideradas.
Com o aumento de pesquisas sobre a incorporação de novos materiais para melhorar os solos, o presente estudo tem o objetivo de comparar a dimensão real da pena de galinha, que varia entre 60 a 100 mm, com a pena cortada de 10 mm misturada com solo laterítico de Brasília, para o reforço de solo como fibra natural. Determinaram-se quatro misturas para a pesquisa: a primeira (denominada Mistura 1) foi de 99,5% de solo e 0,5% de fibra natural, a segunda (denominada Mistura 2) foi de 99,3% de solo e 0,7% de fibra natural, a terceira (Mistura 3) foi de 99,5% de solo e 0,5% de fibra cortada e a última (Mistura 4) foi de 99,3% de solo e 0,7% de fibra cortada. Ao longo da pesquisa, foram realizados ensaios geotécnicos para a determinação das propriedades do solo, que proporcionou chegar a uma porcentagem ótima da umidade. Nas mistura dos novos materiais analisou-se a comportamento da curva de compactação em cima da curva de Índice de Suporte Califórnia (ISC), obtendo-se a umidade ótima. E ainda verificaram-se análises que quantificam as características de resistência das misturas e do solo, obtidas por ISC e ao cisalhamento direto. As misturas com incorporação de penas inteiras apresentaram melhores resultados de ISC.
