O artigo visa descrever alguns aspectos da desigualdade nas oportunidades educacionais no Brasil. A análise descritiva e quantitativa utilizou microdados do Censo, PNAD e Censo Escolar. Verificou-se que 3,8 milhões de crianças e jovens de 4 a 17 anos não frequentavam a escola em 2010, majoritariamente os mais pobres, negros e que vivem no campo. Estimou-se um aporte de R$ 11,8 bilhões anuais para inseri-los no sistema. A análise no nível municipal sugere uma associação positiva entre melhor nível socioeconômico da população e os contextos com melhores condições de oferta e resultados educacionais. Igualmente, verificou-se que o uso de medidas estatísticas que retratam as realidades educacionais em nível nacional ou estadual, muitas vezes, encobre severas desigualdades existentes no nível municipal.
