Dieses Buch stellt die Erweiterung einer Vortragsreihe dar, die ich zu Beginn des Jahres 1914 vor dem Berliner Elektrotechnischen Verein gehalten habe. Die Drucklegung wurde zunächst durch den Weltkrieg verhindert. Manches neue von dem damals Vorgetragenen ist inzwischen auch von Fachgenossen gefunden und veröffentlicht. Darüber hinaus habe ich mich bemüht, den Inhalt so zu ergänzen, daß die Grundlagen der heute bekannten und geklärten elektrischen Schaltvorgänge in ihm enthalten sind, soweit sie für den Betrieb von Starkstromanlagen wichtig sind.Als Schaltvorgänge werden dabei alle nicht stationären Erscheinungen in elektrischen Stromkreisen angesprochen, gleichgültig, ob sie beabsichtigt oder unbeabsichtigt sind, ob sie also die Überleitung in einen neuen Betriebszustand bewirken sollen oder durch zufällige Störungen mit ihren Kurzschluß-und überspannungserscheinungen entstanden sind.Den Stoff habe ich so anzuordnen versucht, daß man in allen Abschnitten stets vom leichteren zum schwierigeren fortschreitet. Um dennoch als Nachschlagewerk verwendbar zu bleiben, sind die einzelnen Kapitel, die verschiedene Erscheinungen behandeln, möglichst selbständig gehalten, und ihre Formeln sind für sich numeriert. Verweisungen auf frühere Kapitel sind dabei nach Möglichkeit vermieden, können aber beim Zusammenhang vieler Erscheinungen natürlich nicht ganz entbehrt werden.Von Literaturangaben im Text habe ich abgesehen, jedoch sind in einem Anhang eine Reihe wichtiger Veröffentlichungen über das behandelte Gebiet zusammengestellt. Auf Vollständigkeit kann dieses Verzeichnis wegen der Fülle der vorhandenen Aufsätze keinen Anspruch erheben, es wird aber dem Leser, der tiefer in die Einzelheiten der Erscheinungen eindringen will, manchen Hinweis geben.
