Crystallization of ZnO was accomplished by different methods in order to study several problems of structure and growth kinetics. Zincite was grown by react5on of ZnF with air, by crystallization from a molten salt solution (system ZnOPbF,), procedures already known, further on by sublimation and by chemical transport reaction.Crystals developed equilibrium forms characteristic for wurtzite type structure ; that are the forms { OOOl}, { 1610) and { 1071) with bipolar developement. While this combination is stable under different physico-chemical conditions the crystal habit varies in a wide range. Whiskers were found that had grown by sublimation as well as linear (by chemical transport reaction od ZnF,) and planar types crystals, the latter having been grown from molten salt solvents. The described variations of morphology may be well understood on the basis of growth mechanisms that are to be expected and observed for wurtzite type crystals.X-ray analysis confirms the ZH-structure (wurtzite) for all the crystals grown by several methods independent from variations in growth conditions and habit. Polytypes and the cubic modification could not be observed. The facts dealt with may be explained in terms of ionic portions in valence.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
