Innovation plays great role in organizational competitiveness and sustainable business processes and it should be a key success policy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) all over the world. To this effect, the purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive understanding of the scientific studies made on the field of innovation and its effect on small and medium enterprises performance. A bibliometric study was used to analyze articles published between 1976 and 2020 and create an illustrative map of innovation in small and medium enterprises; a sample of papers gathered through Web of Science Core Collection database. Accordingly, there were found 2219 documents which were published in 332 sources. VOS viewer was employed to portray network analysis of, authorship, keywords visualization, citations, and countries dealing with the subject. SCIMAT software was also used to do longitudinal thematic analysis. Even though many countries, universities, research institutes, funding agencies, and authors contributed for the growth of this field of study, almost all are from developed nations. This study is one amongst the very few studies made using bibliometric analysis in this field. Moreover, the thematic network diagram reveals two other new themes in the subject, which are taken as knowledge seed, and have high potential for a future study.
Innovative performance is a fundamental asset for building competitive advantage of micro, small and medium enterprises MSMEs. This research empirically examines the direct and indirect relationship between eco-innovation and business performance in Jordanian MSMEs enterprises working in the food processing sector. This research draws on the resource-based view theory to investigate the inter-relationships among three types of eco-innovation (process, product, organizational) and their relative impact on business performance. Furthermore, the researchers used structural equation modelling of 86 samples collected from Jordanian MSMEs operating in the food processing sector. The major contribution of this research is providing a holistic view that explains the inter-relationship among eco-process, eco-product, and eco-organizational innovation. The research reveals the impact of eco-innovation variables on business performance. The greatest is the impact of eco-process on business performance followed by eco-product and eco-organizational respectively. Regarding the effect of eco-organizational and eco-process innovation on eco-product, the findings of the study showed that the greatest is the effect of eco-organizational followed by eco-process. According to the post hoc, the mean differences show that there is statically significant difference in the responses of the respondents towards eco- process regarding different organization age.
This paper aims at identifying the role intermediaries in small medium-sized enterprises’ (SME) quest for eco-innovation according to an empirical qualitative interview among Jordanian companies as well as applied cleaner production as an a approach which reduces environmental pollution along with positive financial benefits for the enterprise. The lack of partnership between knowledge producers (academia) and knowledge users (industry) is tangible and unsatisfying. This also has negative impact on the innovation competitiveness of Small and medium enterprises SMEs. SMEs can access to and benefit from crucial external knowledge through alliance with innovation intermediaries, namely, the Water and Environment Centre (WEC) at the Royal Scientific Society (RSS). Cleaner Production CP is considered the method and tool to recognize where and why a company is losing resources in the form of waste and pollution, and how these losses can be minimized. The key finding that the proactive approach (cleaner production) is one essential push factor to trigger eco-innovations in SMEs. This finding indicates that SMEs might need facilitation for eco-innovation of different levels of support as well as, highlighting drivers and barriers for eco-innovation in SMEs.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
