Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) a vécu une jeunesse dorée dans la Vienne Fin de Siècle. Sa famille, très aisée, fréquentait la bonne société dont les habitudes vestimentaires, les goûts, les activités culturelles et sportives, les relations interpersonnelles, les voyages et les loisirs suivaient les codes de la bourgeoisie. Les penchants et les goûts de Zweig font de lui un homme distingué conscient de sa valeur et des possibilités que lui offre la vie mondaine. Il fait partie d'un groupe restreint de privilégiés, d'une élite sociale, et il cultive le genre de vie qu'on lui a inculqué tout en aspirant à appartenir à une autre élite, celle de l'esprit et de la culture, comme en attestent sa sensibilité artistique et ses ambitions littéraires. Cet article analyse les tenues vestimentaires, le mode de vie et les fréquentations de Zweig. Il se propose aussi d'étudier de nombreuses photographies d'époque, les apports les plus récents de ses biographes et sa correspondance. Il se fixe pour objectif de faire la distinction entre le dandysme, qui se caractérise par la recherche du raffinement et une attitude esthétique non conformiste, le snobisme, qui décrit les manières de celui cherchant à imiter une classe sociale ou intellectuelle qu'il estime supérieure, et les goûts viennois de l'époque qui habitaient l'écrivain. Zweig a un profond désir de se distinguer-appartenant à une famille bourgeoise, il ne peut se fier à des propriétés distinctives à caractère objectif à l'instar de l'aristocratie, d'autant plus qu'il appartient de surcroît à une famille juive qui cherche à s'assimiler 1 , et surtout, en tant qu'individu il est enclin à se détacher de ces mécanismes. Les parents de Zweig, et tout particulièrement sa mère, donnent une inflexion significative à la manière dont l'écrivain envisagera la vie et se vêtira plus tard. L'appartement situé au 14 du Schottenring étant trop exigu après la naissance des deux enfants, les Zweig déménagent dans la Rathausstraße où ils occupent un appartement cossu sur le Ring, l'adresse du domicile étant le reflet de la situation sociale.
