This paper describes the fundamental attractiveness of alpine areas for ecotourism, the inherent natural and cultural sensitivities associated with developing such areas for ecotourism, and the fundamental strategies which should be considered when developing and managing ecotourism on a sustained basis. It places particular emphasis on describing these challenges from an industry development perspective to underline the importance of supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises which tend to be the backbone of the ecotourism sector. Examples from major alpine regions are used to highlight innovative approaches to mountain ecotourism development and management.
