Experiments were conducted on tomato to study the potential of brown alga Sargassum johnstonii as a biofertilizer. Seaweed extract was applied as a foliar spray, soil drench, and soil drench + foliar spray to assess its effect on plant growth, yield, and concentration of lycopene and vitamin C. The main objective of the study was to enhance the biochemical constituents with neutraceutical and antioxidant values in tomato fruit. Different concentrations (0.1%, 0.4%, 0.8%, 2%, 6%, 8%, and 10%; v/v) of seaweed extract were used and growth was observed over a period of 7 months. A total of 14 sprays/drenches were applied at 15-day intervals during the entire vegetative and reproductive phase. A statistically significant increase in vegetative growth (plant height, shoot length, root length, and number of branches), reproductive parameters (flower number, fruit number, and fresh weight), and biochemical constituents (photosynthetic pigments, proteins, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, starch, phenols, lycopene, and vitamin C) was recorded following all three methods of treatment at higher concentrations of seaweed extract. The study also reports auxin-and cytokinin-like activity, and the presence of macro-(Ca, Mg, Na, and K) and micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn), in seaweed extract of S. johnstonii, which makes it a potential biofertilizer.

Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh shows androgynous receptacles, each bearing on an average 12 unisexual conceptacles which open outside by ostiole, and wherein gametangia (antheridia or oogonia) lie interspersed with paraphyses. Since out-put of eggs is extremely low, 4 -6 per female conceptacle, Sargassum sp. ensures its survival under all ecophysiological conditions. The released oogonium is "wrapped" in sulphated polysaccharide-rich wall layer known to provide protection against desiccation. Oogonia after being "extruded" out of ostiole, are "incubated" on receptacle, where they grow into eggs that are easily contacted by spermatozoids. Gamete release is synchronous and almost simultaneous ensuring high rates of fertilization. The release occurs on days falling near a full moon or new moon, during low tides when conceptacles lie exposed. Gamete release occurs first from upper conceptacles, which "house" mature gametangia while lower ones are still developing. This results in gamete release over an extended period of time. The zygote dispersal and propagule recruitment also show adaptations selectively advantageous for the alga.

The global population is expanding day by day, the increase in food demand by the growing population poses serious environmental challenges. To satisfy the increasing food supply, a shift in conventional agriculture was observed that lead to expanded agricultural land uses with reduced wildlife and biodiversity. Deterioration of agricultural land has caused overexploitation of forest land by converting natural habitats into managed systems. Life has originated billions of years ago. Since then, there is a continual extinction of over 90% of the species due to various factors such as increased human population, unsustainable resource consumption, habitat fragmentation, habitat degradation, alien species invasion, pollution, monoculture practices, climate change, loss of forest cover etc. Food, fodder, fuel, medicines, wood, crop plants are some of the natural resources received from the environment. Biodiversity also provides an ecosystem, social, and spiritual services to mankind. We must realize the significance of biodiversity on earth as a valuable resource that can help in developing new products for generations. A consensus has been developed to adopt a holistic view of biodiversity for its conservation and sustainable utilization. Numerous techniques have been proposed and implemented for the conservation of biodiversity and its genetic resources. Since we are dependent on nature for our livelihood, this review paper aims to address the biodiversity and its threats along with some conservation strategies which are not adopted on a large scale.

Ozone (O 3 ) is a stratospheric layer that plays important role in providing support to humans for their survival. It is an essential factor for many global, biological and environmental phenomena. The ultra-violet (UV) rays emitted from sun are captured by ozone and thereby provide a stable ontological structure in the biosphere. Various anthropogenic activities such as emissions of CFCs, HCFCs and other organo-halogens lead to the depletion of ozone. The ozone depletion resulted in secondary production of an ozone layer near the ground (terrestrial ozone layer), which is responsible for adverse effects on plants, humans and environment with increased number of bronchial diseases in humans. The mutations caused by UV rays result in variation in morphogenic traits of plants which ultimately decreases crop productivity. However, UV radiation is required in optimum intensity for both plants and animals. This review takes into an account the wide ranging effects of ozone depletion with a majority of them being detrimental to the plant system.
