Implant restorations can fail biologically or mechanically. Biological factors include unsuccessful osseointegration or presence of peri-implantitis. Mechanical failures include crown fracture, framework fracture, screw loosening, and screw fracture. Fracture of the implant abutment can be a serious problem as the fragment remaining inside the implant may prevent the implant from functioning efficiently. The procedure used for removal of the fractured screw portion is described in this clinical report.
Within the scope of this review, there is no evidence to support a universal technique of ceramic surface treatment for adhesive cementation. A combination of chemical and mechanical treatments might be the recommended solution. The hydrolytic stability of the resin ceramic bond should be enhanced.
Identification of individuals in crime or mass disaster is a daunting task for the forensic experts. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using a memory card for the forensic identification of dentures. The memory card was programmed with all the relevant information regarding the patient identification and the photograph of the patient. A recess was made in the maxillary denture's polished surface on the palatal aspect. The card was wrapped in cellophane, placed in the recess and then covered with pink auto polymerizing acrylic resin. On retrieval of the card from the denture, the entire data could be read as before without any distortion. The identification cards did not pose any problems in function and speech and were esthetically acceptable by the patients.
Implant supported overdentures have proved to be one of the best alternative options in prosthetic rehabilitation of various cases of edentulism. They satisfy the patient's expections, improve quality of life with their long term serviceability and predictable outcomes. Over the years, significant advancements have taken place in the implant systems and the methods of attachments. This paper describes a case report in which a completely edentulous patient was rehabilitated with an implant supported overdenture in mandible and a complete denture in the maxilla.
Background: Surgical resection of orofacial neoplasms has a profound impact on the quality of life (QOL) for patients and their families. Maxillectomy defects are most commonly rehabilitated using obturator prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate and evaluate the QOL of patients with maxillofacial defects after maxillectomy and prosthodontic therapy with obturator prosthesis. QOL is an important consideration that infl uences the living conditions of society. Material and Methods: About 16 out of 20 patients were included in the study. The QOL of these patients who underwent maxillectomy and prosthodontic therapy was assessed by applying a standard questionnaire, Obturator Functional Scale. Results: QOL after prosthetic obturator rehabilitation was assessed to be 59.9 ± 3.7% on average. QOL of obturator patients was not signifi cantly related to age (P = 0.9), and gender (P = 0.320). The extent of therapy was correlated positively with QOL. A signifi cantly better average rating was found in patient who underwent surgery (64.75 ± 1.2), followed by patients with surgery + radiotherapy (60.95 ± 2.02) and surgery + radiotherapy + chemotherapy (55 ± 2.36) with a P = 0.006. QOL was also signifi cantly related to educational status (P = 0.001) in contrast to other parameters like age and gender. Conclusion: Orofacial rehabilitation of patients with maxillofacial defects using obturator prosthesis is an appropriate treatment modality. To improve the situation of patients before and after maxillectomy, suffi cient information about treatment, adequate psychological care, and speech therapy should be provided. The signifi cance of sound functioning of obturator prosthesis for QOL was intensifi ed by the fi ndings of this study and confi rmed the results of similar studies.
