En este trabajo se estudia la transformación microestructural de la aleación Al-Mg 20% peso, empleando tratamiento térmico de envejecimiento, con el propósito de que el contenido de magnesio modifique el endurecimiento por precipitación, para aumentar o disminuir la resistencia mecánica y la susceptibilidad a la corrosión. La experimentación consistió en realizar ensayos por triplicado, variando temperatura, tiempos de solubilización y envejecimiento; estos parámetros son los principales factores que causan el cambio microestructural, que afecta las propiedades mecánicas de la aleación. La microestructura y su variación morfológica fue caracterizada por ensayos de dureza, microscopia óptica y difracción de rayos x. Las muestras de Al-Mg 20% peso se calentaron a temperaturas de 190°C, 300°C y 350°C durante 6 horas. Los ensayos de dureza Brinell revelaron que la dureza es directamente proporcional a la temperatura a la que fue sometida cada muestra. La difracción de rayos DRX mostró la evolución microestructural y las fases presentes en la aleación binaria. La influencia de las condiciones del tratamiento térmico en la aleación Al-Mg 20% permitió encontrar distintas morfologías de precipitados, que se relacionan con las propiedades electroquímicas de la aleación, las cuales permiten relacionarlas indirectamente con la susceptibilidad a la corrosión de esta aleación binaria.
