Fear of falling and cognitive functioning may be more important than pain and depression to predict functional recovery after hip fracture surgery. Rehabilitation strategies should take this into account.
The results from these two randomized, controlled trials show that, after hip fracture surgery, no statistically significant benefits can be achieved from a psychiatric intervention in people who are depressed or a psychological intervention to prevent the onset of depression.
Understanding more about those factors that are associated with knowledge about dementia will help to identify profiles of carers who are in need of education and in matching individually tailored interventions to carers with specific learning needs.
An understanding of the psychological factors which can impede recovery in hip fracture is important for all professionals involved in rehabilitation. Psychologists can provide consultation and support for staff working in physical rehabilitation and can work directly with cases where there is complexity. There is still relatively little known about this important area and further research is needed to provide a clear evidence base.
A bstractObservations of the quality of interaction between staff and residents were m ade to assess the impact of training and support provided to care staff in nursing and residential homes. Assessments were m ade before, during and at the end of the training intervention using an adaptation of the Quality of Interactions Schedule (QUIS: Dean et al., 1993a) modi® ed to avoid the ceiling effect of the original version. A signi® cant increase in the proportion of time staff spent in positive interactions with residents was observed, both in terms of direct care (p , 0.002) and social contact (p , 0.05) at the end of the training schedule. Levels of resident activity were also found to increase immediately after completion of training (p , 0.001). The results suggest that changes in the quality of interaction between staff and residents can be obtained by providing regular training and support to care workers. These ® ndings suggest that the training schedule used in the present study may have a positive impact on the quality of care provided in nursing and residential homes for the elderly.
In April 1972, Corrosion and Protection Centre was established at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, based upon the former Corrosion Science Division of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Simultaneously, the appointment of a Professor of Corrosion Science, Britain's first such chair, was announced. Professor G. C. Wood, formerly Reader in Corrosion Science in the Department of Chemical Engineering, was elected to this Chair. We shall attempt to outline, in a series of brief articles, the reasons for the establishment of the Centre and to describe the approach adopted by the Centre to its three main areas of activity in corrosion and protection, namely education, research and advice and assistance to industry.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
