FAILURE ANALYSIS OF INJECTION MATRIX PINS AbstractIn this study, we analyzed the fracture of two support pins of polymeric material injection molding machine. The segments of the fractured pins were subjected to of fracture analysis, chemical analysis, microstructure and microhardness analysis. The failure always occurs in the same seating position of the pin, where it was found a clearance higher than that stipulated in equipment design. Chemical analysis revealed a low carbon carburizing steel alloyed to nickel and chromium. The microhardness analysis revealed the presence of a low hardness carburized layer. Microstructural analysis detected the presence of brittle phases at grain boundaries and highly heterogeneous microstructure, which favored the fracture. The fracture analysis by scanning electron microscopy revealed brittle fracture in both pins with unstable crack propagation. Failure analysis indicated that excessive clearance associated with metallurgical defects were the factors that led to the failure.
EFFECT OF SUB-ZERO TREATMENT ON CARBURIZED GRIP DIES AbstractGrip dies are components operating in rigorous load bearing conditions. Often the grips are carburized in order to improve wear performance. However the carburization can cause retained austenite which, depending on their concentration can be detrimental in terms of wear. In this study were analyzed grips used in mining, which suffered severe wear in use, and it drastically reduced its useful life. The aim of this study is to identify the material and the manufacturing processes of the grips. The material characterization was performed through chemical analysis, metallography and hardness test. The results indicated a high amount of retained austenite, which was the main cause of the wear of the material. From the results of this study, it was possible to remake the grip applying sub-zero heat treatment, which increased the grip life in over a ten-fold.
FAILURE ANALYSIS OF WIRE ROPE AbstractThis study aims to analyze the failure causes of a wire rope used in civil construction. The cables were submitted to failure analysis methodology. Visual inspections, fracture analysis in low-magnification and scanning electron microscope, microhardness tests, microstructure analysis by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and analysis of mechanical strength for tensile test were performed. The results indicated wear and corrosion of the wire rope, which favored the loss of mechanical strength and the propagation of flat fatigue cracks.
FAILURE ANALYSIS OF WIRE ROPE USED IN CIVIL CONSTRUCTION AbstractThis study deals with the failure analysis of a crane steel wire rope used in the civil construction. Metallography, hardness tests, dimensional analysis and analysis by scanning electron microscopy were performed. Tensile tests were made to determine the reduction of mechanical strength due to the wire area reduction. The analysis of the crane detected the presence of a motor drive device which was in load bearing contact with the wire and was responsible for the failure. The results showed wear in all the wires. Brittle fracture was detected in most of the wires. The metallographic analysis and hardness indicated no metallurgical defects. The results of the tensile test showed a significant decrease in mechanical strength due to reduction of the wire section.
