We consider f (R, T ) modified theory of gravity, in which the gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the matter, in order to investigate the dark-matter effects on the galaxy scale. We obtain the metric components for a spherically symmetric and static spacetime in the vicinity of general relativity solutions. However, we concentrate on a specific model of the theory where the matter is minimally coupled to the geometry, and derive the metric components in the galactic halo. Then, we fix the components by the rotational velocities of the galaxies for the model, and show that the mass corresponding to the interaction term (which appears in the Einstein modified field equation) leads to a flat rotation curve in the halo of galaxies. We consider f (R, T ) modified theory of gravity in which, in general, the gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We indicate that in this type of the theory, the coupling energy-momentum tensor is not conserved. However, we mainly focus on a particular model that matter is minimally coupled to the geometry in the metric formalism and wherein, its coupling energy-momentum tensor is also conserved. We obtain the corresponding Raychaudhuri dynamical equation that presents the evolution of the kinematic quantities. Then for the chosen model, we derive the behavior of the deceleration parameter, and show that the coupling term can lead to an acceleration phase after the matter dominated phase. On the other hand, the curvature of the universe corresponds with the deviation from parallelism in the geodesic motion. Thus, we also scrutinize the motion of the free test particles on their geodesics, and derive the geodesic deviation equation in this modified theory to study the accelerating universe within the spatially flat FLRW background. Actually, this equation gives the relative accelerations of adjacent particles as a measurable physical quantity, and provides an elegant tool to investigate the timelike and the null structures of spacetime geometries. Then, through the null deviation vector, we find the observer area-distance as a function of the redshift for the chosen model, and compare the results with the corresponding results obtained in the literature.

While considering the chameleon scalar field model with the spatially flat FLRW background, we investigate the late-time acceleration phase of the universe, wherein we apply the typical potential usually used in this model. Through setting some constraints on the free parameters of the model, we indicate that the non-minimal coupling between the matter and the scalar field in such a model should be strongly coupled in order to have an accelerated expansion of the universe at the late-time. We also investigate the relative acceleration of the parallel geodesics by obtaining the geodesic deviation equation in the context of chameleon model. Then, through the null deviation vector fields, we obtain the observer area-distance as a measurable quantity to compare the model with other relevant models.

We consider the space-time-matter theory (STM) in a five-dimensional vacuum space-time with a generalized FLRW metric to investigate the late-time acceleration of the universe. For this purpose, we derive the four-dimensional induced field equations and obtain the evolution of the state parameter with respect to the redshift. Then, we show that with consideration of the extra dimension scale factor to be a linear function of redshift, this leads to a model which gives an accelerating phase in the universe. Moreover, we derive the geodesic deviation equation in the STM theory to study the relative acceleration of the parallel geodesics of this space-time, and also, obtain the observer area-distance as a measurable quantity to compare this theory with two other models.
