Le Conservatoire Botanique National du Bassin parisien a été créé en 1994, en liaison avec le ministère de l'Environnement. Il a trois missions : une mission d'étude et de conservation de la flore, une mission de recherche dans le domaine de la biologie de la conservation de la flore, une mission de diffusion et de valorisation des connaissances sur la flore. Sa zone d'action se situe dans le centre de la France (Sud du Bassin parisien). Une des premières réalisations a été la conception d'une base de données sur la flore, à partir de laquelle des synthèses ont pu être réalisées sur l'évolution de la végétation. Ces synthèses posent le problème de l'utilisation des indices de rareté fondés sur le critère de la présence/absence des espèces. Si la conservation d'espèces sauvages ex situ est difficilement envisageable en zone urbaine, celle-ci est en revanche possible en zone périurbaine. Cette stratégie de conservation constituera d'ailleurs un des axes futurs de recherche du Conservatoire.
