Summary: Iron absorption has been measured by a whole body counter method in eight patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS) at varying periods after splenectomy. Iron absorption was greater in these patients than in a group of normal subjects. This finding may be significant in relation to the unusual but well recognised complication of haemochromatosis following splenectomy for HS.
