Background: Sometimes, porcelain restorations experience some degree of colour change in oral environment, which could be related to the quality of diet and surface roughness of these restorations. Objective: The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the influence of Arabic-Coffee on the overall color of glazed or polished porcelain veneers fabricated from four different porcelain materials and two different thicknesses. Materials and Methods: A total of 160 porcelain disc of tested specimens were fabricated to a standardized thickness of 1.00 mm and 0.6mm using the following materials: Feldspathic porcelain, Zircon, E-max Press, and E-max CAD; (80 discs for each thickness and 20 specimens of each material used). Veneer specimens from each material were randomly divided into two subgroups (n = 10): 10 specimens were kept as glazed, were the other 10 tested specimens were adjusted with diamond burs, and then polished with Ivoclar Vivadent ceramic polishing kits using the recommended protocol for polishing provided by the company. A color of all tested specimens was measured using Vita Easy Shade Spectrophotometer. Then, all specimens were immersed in Arabic coffee (Al Mosafer Coffee, Saudi Arabia) and theromcycled for 1 week, and the colors of all tested specimens were then recorded again. Results: It was shown that there is a significant difference in the average color changes before and after immersing in Arabic-Coffee for all materials and thicknesses used in the current study. In-addition, significant differences in color changes were noticed between glazed and polished specimens. Moreover, colour change caused by the coffee was not significantly related to the thickness of the specimens used. Conclusion: Color stability of porcelain materials could be affected by surface treatment whether glazing or polishing. All aesthetic restorations should be deglazed whenever any adjustments have been done to maintain the color match and stability in an oral environment. Also, Arabic-Coffee is considered as a staining drink to a limited extend where patient should be assured to maintain their oral health to maintain the colour stability of their restorations.
Background: While multiple studies have evaluated the effect of body mass index (BMI) on the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, data from Saudi Arabia are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the association between GI symptoms and BMI in a Saudi population.Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2019 and April 2020. The data were collected using an electronic self-administered questionnaire. The study included adult participants and collected data on patients' demographics and GI symptoms. Participants with underlying GI diseases were excluded. A multivariate regression analysis was used to report the adjusted prevalence of GI symptoms in different BMI categories.Results: A total of 4415 participants completed the survey. After applying the exclusion criteria, 3866 were included. The mean age was 26.3 (±8.8) and 58.2% were females. The mean BMI was 25.2 (±6.7), and the distribution of BMI was as follows:
Polymers are widely used materials that have many medical and industrial applications. Some polymers have even been introduced as radiation-shielding materials; therefore, many studies are focusing on new polymers and their interactions with photons and neutrons. Research has recently focused on the theoretical estimation of the shielding effectiveness of Polyimide doped with different composites. It is well known that theoretical studies on the shielding properties of different materials through modeling and simulation have many benefits, as they help scientists to choose the right shielding material for a specific application, and they are also much more cost-effective and take much less time compared to experimental studies. In this study, Polyimide (C35H28N2O7) was investigated. It is a high-performance polymer, well known for its outstanding chemical and thermal stability, as well as for its high mechanical resistance. Because of its exceptional properties, it is used in high-end applications. The performance of Polyimide and Polyimide doped with different weight fractions of composites (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt.%) as a shielding material against photons and neutrons were investigated using a Monte Carlo-based simulation toolkit Geant4 within a wide range of energies of both photons and neutrons from 10 to 2000 KeVs. Polyimide can be considered a good neutron shielding material, and its photon shielding abilities could be further enhanced when adding different high atomic number composites to it. The results showed that Au and Ag gave the best results in terms of the photon shielding properties, while ZnO and TiO2 had the least negative effect on the neutron shielding properties. The results also indicate that Geant4 is a very reliable tool when it comes to evaluating the shielding properties against photons and neutrons of any material.
BackgroundFunctional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are syndromes identified based on a group of symptoms defined according to the criteria of the Rome Foundation. The most commonly observed disorders among the pediatric population are functional abdominal pain disorders and functional constipation. This study aims to identify the patterns of FGIDs among children in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. MethodsA retrospective cohort study was conducted at pediatric gastroenterology clinics from 2015 to 2019 in a tertiary centre in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The FGID outcomes were compared with the patient's gender, age, and other characteristics using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) software to analyze the data. ResultsOne hundred and fifty-two participants met the inclusion criteria, with a mean age of 5.49 ± 3.27 and an average weight of 20.68 ± 12.15 kg. Male patients account for 59.2% of the total population. The prevalence of abdominal pain was 17.84%, while constipation was 50.93%. There was a statistically significant association between abdominal pain and independent variables such as family history (p=0.004) and age, particularly in older children (5-12 years; p=0.001). A statistically significant correlation was found between constipation with gender (p=0.032) and family history (p<0.001). ConclusionThe prevalence of functional constipation and abdominal pain increased with age among children in Makkah City, with constipation being significantly more prevalent than functional abdominal pain. There is a significant relationship between age and family history with abdominal pain, whereas gender and family history are associated with a greater likelihood of constipation.
