Designing reliable computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) systems based on data extracted from breast images and patient data to provide a second opinion to radiologists is still a challenging and yet unsolved problem. This paper proposes two benchmarking datasets (one of them representative of low resolution digitized Film Mammography images and the other one representative of high resolution Full Field Digital Mammography images) aimed to (1) modeling and exploring machine learning classifiers (MLC); (2) evaluating the impact of mammography image resolution on MLC; and (3) comparing the performance of breast cancer CADx methods. Also, we include a comparative study of four groups of image-based descriptors (intensity, texture, multi-scale texture and spatial distribution of the gradient), and combine them with patient's clinical data to classify masses. Finally, we demonstrate that this combination of clinical data and image descriptors is advantageous in most CADx scenarios.
In recent years, Deep Learning techniques applied to steganalysis have surpassed the traditional two-stage approach by unifying feature extraction and classification in a single model, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Several CNN architectures have been proposed to solve this task, improving steganographic images’ detection accuracy, but it is unclear which computational elements are relevant. Here we present a strategy to improve accuracy, convergence, and stability during training. The strategy involves a preprocessing stage with Spatial Rich Models filters, Spatial Dropout, Absolute Value layer, and Batch Normalization. Using the strategy improves the performance of three steganalysis CNNs and two image classification CNNs by enhancing the accuracy from 2% up to 10% while reducing the training time to less than 6 h and improving the networks’ stability.
In this work we present gLibrary/DRI, a Grid-based multirepository environment designed to ease the deployment and hosting of repositories on top of Grid eInfrastructures. Grid environments present several facilities that are worthy for digital repositories. The most important ones are strong security contexts, the data federation, the information sharing and the availability of large computing and storage capacity. The gLibrary/DRI platform offers to arbitrary repositories default implementations for the storage system and node navigation, algorithm launching mechanisms and easy integration with viewer tools for representing the content of the repositories. In particular, we present two examples (1) for hosting a Mammograms archive having several features that help clinicians to make diagnosis through easy inspection of the repository contents (2) for driving and hosting scientific production for non linear dynamics problems formulated as phase spaces.
Abstract. The present paper describes the development of the CardioGRID framework into the GRID infrastructure. The core GRID services; Workload Management System (WMS), Data Management System and Grid Authentication have been implemented. Additionally, a webbased tool -the CardioGRID portal-has been developed to facilitate the user interaction with the GRID. As a result, the user is able to process the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals obtained form a portable data acquisition device and to process it on the GRID. Once the CardioGRID portal is prompted and the user identity is verified through a digital X.509 certificate, the operator may either upload new raw ECG data to the GRID Storage Elements or use already stored data. Then, subsequent analytics from these data are performed as GRID jobs and relevant medical quantities are derived through middle-ware job retrieval mechanism. In summary in this paper was described the development of a medical GRID based system, and its integration to an existing platform for Digital Repositories Infrastructure.
<div><p class="4">In the past decade, the methods and technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) have made great progress. In many cases, they have become part of the usual landscape of solving new or old problems in different fields of human knowledge. In this progress, there are several aspects, especially three aspects: the availability and universality of data in many fields of human activities; a deeper understanding of the mathematics of the basic control algorithm; and the availability and capability of hardware and computing which allows a wide range and a large number of data experiments. Considering these aspects, the key challenge for each problem and application area is to understand how to use these technologies, to what extent they may reach, and what constraints need to be overcome in order to obtain beneficial results (in terms of production cost, value, etc.). This challenge includes identifying data sources and their integration and recovery requirements, the necessity and cost of acquiring or constructing tag data sets, volume data required for measurement, verifying its feasibility, technical method of data analysis task and its consistency with the final application goal, and social and communication sciences are no exception. The knowledge in these fields is related to artificial intelligence, but they do have particularities that define the most appropriate type of artificial intelligence technology and method (i.e. natural language processing). The successful use of AI technology in these disciplines involves not only technical knowledge, but also the establishment of a viable application environment, including the availability of data, the appropriate complexity of tasks to be performed, and verification procedures with experts in the field. This paper introduces the methodology of generating artificial intelligence model, summarizes the artificial intelligence methods and services most likely to be used in social and communication sciences, and finally gives some application examples to illustrate the practical and technical considerations in this regard.</p></div>
