Se presenta el estudio de un grupo de 16 pacientes que desarrollaron enterocolitis necrosante neonatal y revisamos sus diferentes características clínicas y los resultados de los exámenes auxiliares, con el objetivo de precisar la forma de presentación de esta enfermedad en nuestro medio; comparándola con otras series publicadas, logramos diferenciar dos variedades en relación con el tiempo de presentación: temprana y tardía; encontramos como factores de riesgo para desarrollar esta enfermedad una edad gestacional de 35 semanas o menos, peso al nacer de menos de 1500 g, Apgar menor de 7 al minuto, hematocrito mayor o igual a 65%, alimentación artificial temprana, cateterismo de vasos umbilicales y colonización intestinal con gérmenes patógenos. Consideramos de gran valor para el diagnóstico y seguimiento la radiología seriada del abdomen, así como la paracentesis para el diagnóstico de abdomen agudo quirúrgico (An Fac Med UNMSM 11 Epoca 1989; 1 (1-2): 15-18).
