Introduction:The population prevalence rate of Diabetes shows a constant increase, accompanying that of obesity. This characteristic may vary in different regions, in Latin America (LA) we do not have studies carried out systematically in the same population. Material and methods: In Argentina we have carried out the Venado Tuerto 3 (VT3) study. with a probabilistic and multistage, stratified sampling design, and we compared it with the results of the VT1 and VT2 studies. We included 1006 individuals. Anthropometric measurements were taken and biochemical studies were carried out. Results and discussion: The prevalence rate of diabetes was 11.9%, that of obesity was 37.2%, showing an increase with respect to VT2, the prevalence increased with increasing age. The presence of diabetes was positively associated with an increase in BMI, TG and with age. Regarding the other cardiovascular risk factors, there was an increase in total cholesterol levels, triglycerides levels remained stable, and there was a significant decrease in smoking. We have a base constituted by the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the VT population, thus we can escalate to epidemiological and intervention studies at the national and LA level.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
