Resumo: A osteoartrite (OA) é uma patologia caracterizada pela degeneração da cartilagem articular ocasionada por fatores genéticos, metabólicos, bioquímicos e biomecânicos, gerando déficit funcional e estrutural nas articulações sinoviais, com início insidioso, lento e progressivo ao longo do tempo. A articulação do joelho é a mais acometida, apresentando maior incidência em mulheres. Nessa perspectiva, este estudo tem como objetivo verificar os benefícios da aromaterapia com óleos essenciais no tratamento da osteoartrite (OA) de joelho Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura onde foi realizada uma busca nas bases de dados LILACS, PubMed, MEDLINE, PEDro, SciELO e ScienceDirect. Os artigos que compõem essa revisão integrativa foram publicados entre os anos de 2016 a 2019. A amostra total foi composta por 405 indivíduos com idade média variando entre 55,88 e 78,30 anos. O uso da aromaterapia se caracterizou de forma diversa nos cinco estudos, por períodos de tempo que variaram de três semanas a um mês, utilizando óleos essenciais isolados ou combinados.Nesta revisão, 80% dos estudos associaram a aromaterapia à massagem, utilizando técnicas como effleurage e petrissage. De forma geral, os resultados mostraram que a aromaterapia aplicada na osteoartrite de joelho é eficaz no alívio da dor, melhora da rigidez e da realização das atividades de vida diária, estado funcional e qualidade de vida, sendo considerada uma prática integrativa e complementar que apresenta grande potencial para utilização por profissionais de saúde na população acometida por OA.
