A huge deposit of buton natural asphalt in Buton island of South East Sulawesi, Indonesia, has not been fully utilized for asphalt concrete mixture. This is because the asphalt of buton granular asphalt is trapped in mineral, and currently the modifier to rejuvenate buton granular asphalt has not resulted in road pavement that can bear heavy daily traffic. This study aims to examine the performance of bio-flux oil as modifier of buton granular asphalt to determine its asphalt mixture requirement properties. This bio-flux oil consists of the oil derived from the seeds of the oil nut tree (Calophyllum inophyllum L.), crude pine resin from pine tree (Pinus merkusii), and other ingredients in certain composition.
Bituminous binders used for flexible pavement materials are primarily obtained from refinement of petroleum. Since petroleum is non-renewable resource, there is an urgent need to produce alternative binders from bio-renewable resources. Standard alternative binders include pyrolyzed materials, jatropha curcas oil, waste cooking oil, pine resin, etc. This article presents an overview on the application of various types of alternative binders as a modifier for virgin asphalt, rejuvenator for aging asphalt, and recycling agent for reclaimed asphalt pavement. This review discusses the effect of using alternative binders on the physical and rheological properties of asphalt 60/70 and shows that alternative binders’ in appropriate dosage can enhance the physical properties of virgin asphalt and restore the properties of the aged binders. It is also concluded that rutting resistance and fatigue performance are affected by an alternative binder. The possibility of using alternative bituminous binder from economics point of view is also discussed for consideration of its applications in the paving industry.
The use of natural asphalt is an alternative to meet the high demand for oil asphalt. Asbuton is natural asphalt from Buton Island, Indonesia. However, the use of Asbuton is not as easy as oil asphalt because the asphalt it contains is hard. The asphalt-concrete mixture must go through a rejuvenation process for several days before being compacted. This study aims to determine the performance of asphalt-concrete mixture using Asbuton if it is compacted immediately after mixing, without giving time for the rejuvenation process. Compaction is done when the mixture is hot and after the mixture is cold. Compaction of the asphalt-concrete mixture in hot temperature (150ºC), based on mechanical characteristics (stability, flow, and Marshall Quotient), has better performance than that compacted in cold temperature (30ºC). However, compaction in both hot and cold temperatures, based on their volumetric characteristics, does not meet the requirements for use as road pavements. The performance of the asphalt mixture can be improved by giving time in the process of softening the asphalt content in Asbuton
