Summary
Karyotype analysis and morphometric measurements of the chromosomes of seventeen species of birds belonging to a single order Passeriformes are described. Chromosomes of different species worked out in each family have been compared using quantitative methods and tentative conclusions have been drawn regarding chromosomal affinities of species of different taxonomic categories. Pericentric inversion is found to play a significant role in karyotype evolution in this order. A number of species exhibit chromosomal polymorphism both within the populations and between populations geographically separated.
