Background: Patient safety (PS) has been identified as a significant healthcare challenge. A good safety attitude helps healthcare workers (HCWs) to decrease medical errors.Aim: This study aimed to assess the PS attitude and identify its determinants among HCWs.Setting: This study was conducted in Sharqia Governorate at different levels of health care. Methods: This was a comparative cross-sectional study that involved240 HCWs selected after using a multistage cluster sampling technique from Sharqia Governorate. In ordertto assess the respondents’ attitudes towards PS, the modified Chinese Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (CSAQ) was used. Results: The scale with the highest percentage of positive responses, on average, was safety climate (49.59%). The study found a statistically significant association between the level of health care and mean scores of ‘teamwork climate, perception of management, job satisfaction, working conditions, and stress recognition’ and the overall CSAQ score. In regression analysis, the highest degree of education and job type were significant predictors of PS attitude among the HCWs under study (p = 0.031 and 0.011, respectively). Conclusion: According to the study’s findings, PS is low among HCWs in both healthcare units and hospitals, with a significantly higher score among hospital workers than among primary care workers. All PS composites need improvement starting with regular assessment of PS culture along with continuous monitoring.
Thyroid disorders are important and growing health problems worldwide. However, considering real life, assessment of knowledge and attitudes of physicians towards thyroid diseases in primary care is lacking. The study aimed to determine the difference in knowledge and attitudes of Family physicians (FPs), General Practitioners (GPs) and internists in primary care settings of Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) towards Hypo and hyperthyroidism before and after medical education. This study is a pre-post interventional study done in primary health care facilities on 70 physicians from the three medical disciplines. Doctors were interviewed at their work place with a questionnaire consisting of personal data of the doctor and twenty questions about knowledge and attitudes towards thyroid disorders then they were handled the ideal answers according to the guidelines and the interview was repeated after two months. This study revealed that the mean age of physicians was 34±7.8, the mean duration of work was 6.8±5 years. The pre-interventional knowledge of internists was superior to family physicians and general practitioners. There was a highly significant change of physician knowledge (from 4.1±1.4 to 8±1.6) after intervention and there was a weakly significant change in attitude (from 3.1±0.9 to 3.2±0.9 and from 3.1±1.5 to 3.3±1.6 respectively) among general practitioners and family physicians after intervention. It was concluded that doctors from the three medical disciplines had a significant change in their responses to knowledge questions after intervention. So, it's a must to train doctors in primary care how-to pick-up cases of thyroid disorders and how to manage them according to the guidelines and when they need to refer these cases.
Treating depression can be a financial burden on the health care system and time consuming; finding an alternative that may prevent or decrease the occurrence of depression may be better for adolescents. This study intended to estimate the prevalence of depression among pubertal school adolescent girls and to determine the difference between physically active pubertal girls and sedentary ones regarding the presence of depressive symptoms. It is a cross sectional study, done in 10 th of Ramadan city, on 365 adolescent pubertal girls in 7-12 grades. The Short Moods and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms and Godin Leisure-Time Exercise questionnaire for the assessment of self-reported leisure-time physical activity. This study revealed that the prevalence of depression in adolescent girls was (47.4%). Depression is significantly present among insufficiently active students (53.8%) with (COR 3.9, 95% CI 2.4-6.5) with (P<0.001). The percent of active students are significantly higher among those attending private schools (44.4%) (COR 3.7, 95% CI 2.1-6.8) versus (27.4%-28.2%) (COR 1.2, 95% CI 0.8-2.0 and 0.3, 95% CI 0.2-0.5) respectively in language governmental and in governmental schools with (P value<0.001). There is significant negative correlation between depression and leisure-time physical activity (r=-0.49, P<0.001). It was concluded that depression is inversely related to physical activity, so it's a must to encourage all adolescents to be engaged in regular bases physical activity to avoid psychiatric troubles as depression that may occur in this age with hormonal changes of puberty.
