Bakgrunn: Forskning viser at pasienter i generell anestesi som har fått sine luftveier sikret med en larynxmaske eller en endotrakealtube opplever postoperative pharyngolaryngeale komplikasjoner. Et kontrollert cufftrykk har vist reduksjon i komplikasjoner. Hensikt: Hensikten med studien var å undersøke hvilke metoder anestesisykepleiere bruker for å kontrollere cufftrykk, og hvilke begrunnelser de har for å bruke cufftrykkmanometer. Metode: Totalt 45 anestesisykepleiere ble observert når de kontrollerte cufftrykket i en endotrakealtube og en larynxmaske. Anestesisykepleierne ble i tillegg spurt om hvilke begrunnelser de hadde for å bruke eller ikke bruke cufftrykkmanometer. Resultater: Palpasjon var den metoden som anestesisykepleierne brukte hyppigst for å kontrollere cufftrykket i endotrakealtubene (n = 28) og larynxmaskene (n = 15). Cufftrykkene i endotrakealtubene var utenfor de anbefalte grensene i (n = 19) av tilfellene, og (n = 8) av disse var over 50 cmH2O. Over halvparten (n = 16) av cufftrykkene målt i larynxmaskene var over 60 cmH2O, og (n = 10) var over 90 cmH2O. De mest vektlagte begrunnelsene for å ikke bruke cufftrykkmanometer var (i) ikke tilgjengelige, (ii) det var ikke rutine å bruke dem, (iii) det var ikke opplæring i bruken, og (iv) anestesisykepleierne stolte på egen erfaring. Konklusjon: Kontrollteknikk og undersøkelser for å kontrollere cufftrykk varierte både for endotrakealtube og larynxmaske. Kontroll av cufftrykk med cufftrykkmanometer bør vurderes som standard rutine ved endotrakealtube og larynxmaske.
