The authors compared maternal estimates of child performance and performance-based scores using the Learning Accomplishment Profile. Very strong positive relationships were found for maternal estimates and evaluator ratings for overall scores as well as for four subscales. No significant difference was found for overall scores between the two data sources. A significant difference was found, however, for one subscale, gross motor. Results indicated that professionals should be aware of the purpose of individual assessment activities in order to effectively use parents as data sources.
Researchers and practitioners increasingly recognize the importance of ecologically valid family-focused assessment tools, especially given the mandates of P.L. 99-457. The present study investigated the measurement integrity of one possible tool, the Inventory of Parent Experiences (IPE) (Crnic & Greenberg, 1981). Subjects were both parents from 66 intact families, half of which included children with handicaps. The results were generally not supportive of an interpretation that subscale or subsubscale scores have requisite measurement characteristics. At best, these scales must be viewed as first-step efforts to begin the development of appropriate item pools and item classification systems. However, the results regarding the use of IPE total scores were more favorable and were also consistent with previous research.
This paper presents some of the uses of vocational evaluation in Texas and the methods used in conducting such evaluations. Some positive and negative aspects of evaluations revealed during site surveys are noted and possible improvements are reviewed.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between individual and overall Estimated Developmental Ages (EDAs) calculated for the Uzgiris and Hunt Scales, as outlined in a clinical manual developed by Dunst, and Bayley mental age scores. Thirty-four infants with handicaps enrolled in early intervention programs served as the subjects. The results indicated that (a) there was a significant difference between overall EDAs and Bayley metal age, with Bayley estimates being on the average some 2.1 months higher; (b) the overall EDA and each of the seven individual EDAs were significantly and positively related to Bayley mental age; (c) when all seven EDAs were used in a multiple regression procedure, schemes for relating to objects (sensorimotor play) emerged as the best single correlate when the effects of the other scales were controlled; and (d) a commonality analysis revealed that schemes for relating to objects also explained the largest percentage of unique variance of Bayley mental scores. Recommendations of a test battery reflecting several approaches to the assessment of infants with handicaps are presented. · One pervasive issue facing professionals in the assessment of infants with known or suspected handicaps is the availability of appropriate assessment instruments or techniques.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
