O desmatamento é um processo que devasta a cobertura vegetal da superfície terrestre e desencadeia impactos como a degradação do solo, destruição do habitat faunístico e assoreamento dos cursos hídrico causados por processos erosivos. Essa situação se agravada quando ocorre em unidade de proteção integral cuja finalidade é proteger remanescente de Mata Atlântica e seus recursos naturais, conforme determinado na legislação brasileira. Assim, a presente pesquisa teve por objetivo analisar os fatores antrópicos que ocasionam o processo de desmatamento na Reserva Biológica de Pedra Talhada-AL/PE evidenciando as implicações socioambientais desencadeadas no meio ambiente local. Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados compreenderam contextualização teórica da temática, trabalho de campo, conversas informais com funcionário e morador da reserva e mapeamento espaço-temporal da cobertura da Terra. Constatou-se que o processo de desmatamento ocorrido na Reserva Biológica era motivado por interesses econômicos tendo em vista a comercialização da madeira, abertura de áreas para produção agrícola de subsistência familiar e usos domésticos. Também foi verificado redução do desflorestamento, principalmente, a partir de 2011, perante ações de fiscalização mais eficiente e a saída da população mediante pagamento de indenizações, proporcionando recuperação de 6,35% das áreas de vegetação natural.
