Las cánulas nasales de alto flujo (CNAF) parecen mejorar la eficiencia respiratoria al inundar el espacio anatómico nasofaríngeo con un flujo elevado y constante, y contribuir a la disminución del trabajo respiratorio y al lavado de CO2. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica con el objetivo de este artículo es describir los elementos principales sobre la oxigenoterapia y cánula nasal de alto flujo en pediatría. La oxigenoterapia está indicada siempre que exista una deficiencia en el aporte de oxígeno hacia los tejidos. La CNAF consiste en aportar a través de una cánula nasal, un flujo de oxígeno, solo o mezclado con aire, por encima del flujo inspiratorio del niño. La oxigenación del niño, permite resguardar sus funciones biológicas y su consecuente disminución en la posibilidad de prevenir complicaciones que suelen gestarse a partir de la hipoxemia. En cuanto a las ventajas y desventajas del alto flujo, al encuestar sobre la percepción de los profesionales, la mayoría considera que las CNAF mejoran la comodidad del paciente, disminuyen el trauma nasal y facilitan el inicio y la progresión de la alimentación enteral.
