La vitamina D ha sido motivo de muchos estudios y discusiones tratando de comprobar sus bondades y beneficios, y hoy en día, es considerada una hormona por múltiples razones. En la última década hemos tenido cientos de publicaciones a favor y en contra de su uso en diferentes patologías. Esto ha traído como consecuencia que, en diferentes países, grupos de expertos en el tema se reúnan para revisar la literatura, sacar conclusiones y así orientar a los diferentes grupos médicos en el uso racional de la mal llamada vitamina D.
Actualmente se le ha dado mucha importancia en diferentes campos. Desde las primeras publicaciones de su efecto sobre fracturas y caídas, pasando posteriormente por su papel en cáncer, riesgo cardiovascular e inmunología, hasta llegar al embarazo y feto.
Por tal motivo en Panamá, un grupo de expertos, miembros del Consejo Panameño de Osteoporosis, decidimos realizar una revisión de la literatura de los últimos 15 años para llegar a conclusiones, que sean de utilidad a la comunidad médica y así poder tomar mejores decisiones. Se revisaron las bases de datos, PubMed, MEDLINE, Clinical Key, HINARI y la plataforma RIMA. Se utilizaron las palabras claves relacionadas a cada pregunta y se seleccionaron los artículos que abordasen el concepto, de manera directa, publicados durante el período comprendido entre 2003 y 2018.
