The wit, verve and insight with which she presents "her" Franklin, however, makes him real and believable and lets us see an important dimension of America's first ambassador. Mrs. Lopez shows us again that Franklin was indeed Carl Van Doren's "harmonious human multitude," able to be many persons and to take unto himself some of the most appealing qualities of widely varying styles of life, yet always remaining himself, a matchless human being, unalienated, finding glorious fulfillment under self-control.
