The present article discusses the nature of quality of life (QOL) in general and critically evaluates its application in the area of health and illness. As regards health related quality of life (HRQoL), it is now widely recognised that treating a disease in a purely biomedical framework, where emphasis is only on curing the disease and on providing prolonged life to the patient, is not sufficient. Now the focus is also on how to enhance the QOL of patients. In this context this article attempts to identify and critically evaluate some of the contemporary issues relevant in the area of HRQoL. The issues covered in this article include relatively simple issues related to the meaning, importance, usefulness and prevalent approaches in the area of HRQoL research and complex issues such as (i)who would be accountable for a patient’s HRQoL (ii)being HRQoL stable or it changing over time (response shift) for people facing chronic diseases and (iii)whether gender differences exist in this regard. Lastly, the article also discusses the implication of HRQoL in the area of health management and intervention.
Social skills play an instrumental role in individuals’ life. It helps individuals to communicate and maintain social relationships. Presently, the smartphone has completely changed the mode of social communication, and social skills may play a crucial role in this regard. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate the association between social skills and perceived smartphone usage (both positive and negative usage). The perceived negative usage of the smartphone has been assessed in terms of smartphone addiction. Sample of the present study comprised of (n=509) adult participants. Pearson’s product moment correlation (r) and multiple regression method was employed to assess the relationship between the proposed variables. Findings of the study demonstrated that social skills are significantly related with both perceived positive usage of smartphone and smartphone addiction. Social expressivity and emotional control emerged as significant predictors for both positive usage of smartphone and smartphone addiction. The findings of the study may have important implications for bringing awareness among the individuals regarding the role of social skills for effective usage of smartphone as well as for future researches in this direction. Keywords: social skill, perceived positive smartphone usage, smartphone addiction, emotion expressivity, emotional control
In neurobehavioral research, animal model has played a crucial role in yielding experimental data as well as, in the development of new insights. Researchers are always trying to develop novel animal models to understand fundamental features of physiological, behavioral and psychological disorders. Zebra fish () is now considered globally as a new and useful model in biomedical research. The objective of the present study was to assess behavioral changes in adult zebra fish after acute exposure to different pharmacological and herbal compound. Adult zebra fish of 4-5-months-old were exposed to different concentrations of unknown test drug with the standard for 5 min. The test was conducted separately for each drug concentration as well as control. Behavioral activity parameters viz. novel tank test and light and dark transition test were recorded for each animal during the exposure period. Results: Zebra fish exposed to Test drug () showed change in behavioral activity with significant to the standard drug caffeine. In view of the above findings, these results suggested that exposure of adult zebra fish with drug produce the expected changes in the behavior like stress and anxiety; therefore, adult zebra fish can be used an alternative approach for the assessment of new chemical entities for their effect on behavioral activity.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
