Mães que vivenciam a internação de seus filhos após o parto relatam sentimentos negativos e necessitam de práticas de acolhimento que favoreçam a vinculação diádica e a recuperação da saúde materno-infantil. Nesse estudo, buscou-se descrever e comparar a percepção de mães de bebês pré-termo e a termo quanto aos sentimentos vivenciados durante a internação do bebê e diante da expectativa de sua alta. Participaram do estudo 60 mães, 30 de bebês nascidos pré-termo (G1) e 30 de bebês a termo (G2), ambos internados após o parto. As mães responderam a uma entrevista semiestruturada, com dados sociodemográficos e antecedentes gestacionais, e o Protocolo de Avaliação de Sentimentos e Percepções Maternas. As mães de G1 relataram expectativa de mais tempo de internação (p=0,02), maior confiança na equipe hospitalar (p=0,05) e menor necessidade de serviço especializado após a alta (p=0,04). Para G2, observou-se maior frequência de sentimentos negativos diante da notícia da internação e positivos diante da expectativa de alta; maior gravidade quanto ao estado de saúde de seus filhos (p=0,03) e reações paternas mais negativas frente à notícia da internação (p=0,00). Os dados indicaram que as mães de ambos os grupos precisam de cuidados profissionais e de uma rede de apoio.
