Low density polyethylenes (LDPE) made by the known high pressure processes show significantly different molecular structures. When the reaction conditions are variable, e.g. in a tubular reactor (resin T) or in a system of two autoclaves with a lower 9 . J .temperature m the first reactor (resin A~'), the polymer shows a narrower molecular weight distribution, but wider distributions of long-chain and short-chain branching compared with a polymer produced at constant temperature and under practically ideal mixing in a stirred autoclave reactor (resin A). The polymer Tdisplays a decrease in long-chain and short-chain branching with growing molecular weight and differs from sample A in the type of long-chain branching and in the molecular shape. A-type molecules show tree-like branching and nearly globular shapes whereas the T-type molecules are characterized by comb-like branching and consequently have more extended (rod-like but flexible) conformations. These structures may be interpreted in terms of reaction kinetics. The differences in molecular structure lead to changes in the morphology. For example, the bulk density distributions of the polymers Tand A~:" are narrower than that of polymer A although the latter has a much narrower short-chain branching distribution. The morphology (e.g. crystallinity and crystal size) is dominated by the tendency of short sidechains to accumulate in the amorphous phase and by the limited mobility of the molecules in the melt during crystallization. The proportion of short side-chains incorporated in the crystalline phase ranges from about 20% at high molecular weights to about 7% at low molecular weights for the resins A and T. The physical and technological properties are closely related to molecular structure and morphology. They may be optimized by selecting suitable polymerization conditions, e.g. by use of a new two-autoclave process.
S U M M A R Y : Basic assumptions and theoretical approaches concerning the determination of long chain branching by experimental determination of intrinsic viscosities [a], molecular weights M, and radii of gyration r of statistical coils of polymers with low heterogeneity of molecular weight (U, 4 0,5) are examined. Neither of the two theories which are often applied makes use of the correct relation between the ratios [q],,"t]], and rT/rTof branched and linear mole-cules of a given molecular weight in good solvents. Both theories neglect the fact that the Fox-PLoRY-constant @ of molecules with strong random branching reaches a limiting value and that certain branching mechanisms give abnormal coil shapes and hence abnormal Fox-FLow-constants@). This is verified experimentally by measurements on swollen spherical gel particles and fractions of star shaped as well as statistically branched polymers and of low-density polyethylenes.
Herrn Professor S. Petersen zum 65. Geburtstag gewidmet (Eingangsdatum: 4. SUMMARY:It is possible to separate chemically different polymers dissolved in a suitable homogeneous solvent mixture quantitatively, if the solvents are miscible at high temperatures, but show phase separation at a lower temperature. The new method of fractionation is described in terms of the solubility parameters of polymers and of mixed solvents and in some cases by using the second virial coefficients. The usefulness of this fractionation method is demonstrated by the fact that about thirty different blends of polymers and copolymers, inclusively graft-copolymers can be separated in one fractionation step with respect to their chemical nature. The fractionation using demixing solvents is especially useful in cases where other fractionation methods, e.g. fractional precipitation, do not give satisfactory results. Brsg., Marz 1976. 1525 R. KuhnIn special cases the new fractionation method allows quantitative separations of three chemically different polymers or oligomers.
