ZusammenfassungEin politisches Freiheitsbewusstsein, das im Gegensatz zur Tyrannis stand, war wahrscheinlich schon bei Solon vorhanden. Der entscheidende Anstoß für die Verwendung des Begriffs ἐλευθερία/eleutheria gingjedoch von Sparta aus, wo sich die elitären Vollbürger,ähnlich wie die Vollbürger in Gortyn, als ἐλεύθεροι/eleutheroibetrachteten. Diese ἐλευθερία/eleutheria implizierte u.a. auch die Freiheit von Tyrannis. Aus diesem Selbstverständnis heraus wandelte Pausanias 479 v. Chr. in Plataiai den Kult des Ζεὺς Σωτήρ/Zeus Soterin den des Ζεὺς Ἐλευθέριος/Zeus Eleutheriosum, wobei sich der Schwerpunkt dieser ἐλευθερία/eleutherianach Lage der Dinge zwangsläufig auf die äußere Freiheit verlagerte, und stellte Plataiai unter den Schutz aller griechischen Bundesgenossen. Mit der Erweiterung von ἐλευθερία/eleutheriavon der inneren auf die äußere Unabhängigkeit entstand der umfassende politische Freiheitsbegriff, der für Sparta zwar anfangs noch keine große Bedeutung hatte, den aber nach und nach – durchaus zögernd ‒ alle Griechen übernahmen. Während in Griechenland Freiheit zunächst als Unabhängigkeit vom Perserreich verstanden wurde, verschob sich auf Sizilien nach der Abwehr der Karthager und Etrusker der Akzent auf die Befreiung von der Tyrannis. Zur vollen Entfaltung gelangte der politische Freiheitsbegriff nicht in den Kriegen Athens gegen das Perserreich seit 478, sondern erst um die Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts, als die Theten in Athen die politische Gleichberechtigung erlangt hatten, und ging wenig später eine Symbiose mit dem Begriff δημοκρατία/demokratia ein. Die politische ἐλευθερία/eleutheriawurde zu einem Teil der griechischen Identität. Gegen Ende des 5. Jahrhunderts entstand daraus auch der griechische Herrschaftsanspruch gegenüber den „Barbaren“.
