Introdução: O câncer constitui num relevante problema de saúde pública no Brasil e no mundo com morbimortalidade crescente. Diversas abordagens podem ser utilizadas para o tratamento de pacientes oncológicos, sendo uma das principais, a quimioterapia, que baseiase no uso de fármacos antineoplásicos. Estas drogas podem ser administradas de diferentes formas, mas, principalmente pela via endovenosa, sendo os cateteres Port-a-Cath, dispositivos centrais de longa duração, de grande auxílio nesta modalidade de tratamento. Objetivo: Caracterizar o conhecimento, a adaptação e a incidência de complicações em pacientes submetidos à implantação de Port-a-Cath para administração de quimioterapia antineoplásica em um serviço hospitalar de oncologia sul mineiro. Método: Estudo transversal descritivo, desenvolvido por meio de entrevistas a 35 pacientes oncológicos submetidos à implantação de Port-a-Cath, entre maio de 2018 e junho de 2019, e por consulta à dados de seus prontuários disponíveis na instituição hospitalar de interesse. Resultados: A maioria dos pacientes (88,57%) sabia os motivos de implantação do cateter, mas não conhecia seu modo de funcionamento (54,29%). Foram analisados 34 prontuários, verificando-se em seis destes (17,65%) ao menos uma complicação. Embora os pacientes tenham relatado dor (22,6%) e desconforto (26,0%), 92,6% dos participantes mostraram-se adaptados/satisfeitos com o cateter. Conclusão: Conclui-se que o Port-a-Cath é um dispositivo importante para os pacientes oncológicos e que houve um perfil de conhecimento, adaptação/satisfação e distribuição de complicações heterogêneo dentre os participantes deste estudo.
