Background: It is believed that smoking is the gateway to use substances and illicit drugs. Due to an increase in smoking among students, we thought there is a need for more efficient ways to prevent smoking among the young and adolescents. Objectives: This study aimed to develop an extended version of the Health Belief Model (HBM) with elements of Health Literacy (HL) to assess whether an educational intervention could be effective in smoking prevention based on this new development in 2016. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study performed on 130 students living in dormitories of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, who were recruited and assigned to experimental and control groups (each containing 65 students). The experimental group received 6 electronic educational sessions via telegram application while the control group received no intervention. The data were collected using a questionnaire containing items on HBM, smoking preventive behaviors, and a measure of HL (the HL inventory for adults-HELIA). The questionnaire was completed at three time-points: before, immediately and three months after the intervention. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: Before the intervention, there was no significant difference in the demographic and background variables, the underlying level of knowledge, preventive behaviors, HL, and all the constructs of the model between the groups (P > 0.05). After the intervention, comparing two groups showed that the mean scores of knowledge, preventive behaviors, HL, and all components of the model changed significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Background:Adolescence is a risky period with high tendency towards drug abuse. Addressing the problem of drug abuse among students is essential.Objectives:This study was carried out in 2013 with the purpose of investigating the prevalence of substance abuse among dormitory students of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.Patients and Methods:In this descriptive analytical study, which was carried out in 2013, a total of 604 students living at dormitories of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences were selected by random sampling method. A questionnaire designed by the researcher was used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test.Results:The prevalence of substance abuse among the students was 15.4%. With respect to the types of the drug used by students, the highest frequencies belonged to smoking 4.47% and hookah with 42.9%. Forty-eight percent of the students, who used drugs, started it for the first time when they were 18 years old or younger. About 58% of students used drugs for the first time in dormitories and parks. Students’ meetings and parties with friends were frequent occasions for substance abuse (47.5%).Conclusions:Students are considered one of the most vulnerable groups of society. The students living in dormitories are more vulnerable to drug abuse due to the lack of parental supervision and the impact of peer pressure. Therefore, localization of acceptance at Universities in order to prevent cultural mixing of students and education programs for teaching life skills to students efficiently reduce their substance abuse.

BACKGROUND: In chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, understanding the factors that improve prevention, such as health literacy (HL), is essential in reducing the incidence of these diseases. This study aimed to determine the association between HL and adoption of osteoporosis-preventive behaviors among students in Qazvin. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study in which 375 female students (aged 15–18 years) at high schools (grades 10 th , 11 th , and 12 th ) in Qazvin city were selected, in 2019. Sampling method was multistage. To collect data, the standardized questionnaire for measuring HL in adolescents (health literacy measure in adolescents), in addition to another questionnaire for assessing osteoporosis-preventive behaviors, was used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22 by descriptive statistics and logistic regression. The association considered significant when P < 0.05. RESULTS: The mean scores of adoption of osteoporosis-preventive behaviors and HL were 22.43 ± 5.60 and 70.84 ± 12.58, respectively. Logistic regression showed that there was a significant association between the adoption of osteoporosis-preventive behaviors and HL ( P = 0.001). In addition, the association between the adoption of osteoporosis-preventive behaviors and age was also significant ( P = 0.048 and odds ratio = 3.35). CONCLUSIONS: Young students and those of low HL showed less adoption of osteoporosis-preventive behaviors. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to design educational programs that may raise the knowledge and awareness of those students about such these diseases, mainly prevention.

Background: Smoking causes premature and preventable death of millions of educated people. Objectives: Given the role model for medical students in the future of the country, the current study aimed at determining the smoking prevalence and its related factors among dormitory students of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran. Methods: The current cross sectional study was conducted with descriptive-analytical approach on 355 dormitory students selected by single-stage random cluster sampling method. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire including demographic and background information and smoking features. Then, data were analyzed with SPSS version. 21, using descriptive statistics and Chi-square test. Results: The current study findings indicated that 23.8% (n = 81) of the subjects were current smokers; smoking had a significant relationship with gender variables, history of probation, close friends that smoked, and employment (P < 0.05). Conclusions: In comparison to other studies, the smoking prevalence was relatively high. Therefore, the necessity of proper education about the harms and health effects of smoking are felt more than ever.

Background and Objective: Health literacy as one of the most important issues for promoting public health has gained the attention of policy makers. The quality of life and striving to promote it play an important role in individual and social health. Due to the role of adults as a productive group in the community, we aimed to determine the relationship between health literacy and quality of life in adults. Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted among 256 adults aged 18 to 65 years in Karaj, Iran, 2016. The participants were selected using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using the Health Literacy Inventory for Adults (HELIA) and the Quality of Life questionnaire (SF-12). Then, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient in SPSS, version 21. Results: In this study, 24.2% (n=62) of the participants had inadequate health literacy and 23.4% (n=60) had relatively adequate health literacy. The mean±SD scores of quality of life in the physical health and mental health domains, as well as the overall quality of life were 16.24±2.68, 20.43±3.89, and 36.68±5.82 out of 48, respectively. Health literacy had a significant positive correlation with physical and mental dimensions of quality of life and overall quality of life (P<0.05). Conclusion: Regarding the relationship between health literacy and dimensions of quality of life, it seems necessary to focus more attention on improving people's health literacy, especially adults with inadequate health literacy, in quality of life promotion programs.
