Aerodynamic characteristics of a car are important in reducing car accidents caused by wind loading and in lowering fuel economy, continuing to be a major topic of interest. The restrictions of wind tunnel tests and the rising trend of numerical methods have been complied with by past researchers to investigate vehicle aerodynamics computationally. This research aims to analyze comprehensively the effect of crosswinds on a moving vehicle in terms of aerodynamic loadings and flow structures using commercial fluid dynamic software ANSYS FLUENT. This paper will focus on the CFD-based simplified compact car body developed in CATIA V5 by neglecting the external parts such as side mirrors and underbody.
Global concerns on quality and environmentally sustainable products are giving extensive pressure on the competitiveness of Malaysian palm oil industry. As part of palm oil supply chain, the fresh fruit bunch (FFB) dealers play an important role in the development of the industry as well as contributing a significant impact on the environmental pollution. Despite the adoption of codes of practice (COPs) by dealers, recent studies reveal the problem of quality deterioration of FFB is caused by ineffective handling practices including poor housekeeping and delay in transportation. Empirical evidence shows that the quality and environmental performance of firms improve through 5S practices. Therefore, this conceptual study primarily aims to improve the existing practices for the handling of harvested oil palm by incorporating the 5S concept (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain) into COPs. In this context, several propositions are formulated based on literature. The findings of survey and case studies within FFB dealer sub-sector shall be used as input to enhance the proposed improvement work. The propositions shall be validated by a panel of experts through the Delphi technique before it can be used as a reference by FFB dealers to simultaneously improve their quality and environmental performance.
The historical development of fire suppression technology evolved in the 1930s since the application of Halons as a fire extinguishing agent. The fire may cause tremendous losses to organizations. It affects the chain of businesses and the stability of the economic growth of a country. The key issues of greenhouse effects and safety and health as well contributes to the sudden change of the technology of fire extinguishing systems. The establishment of the Montreal Protocol and Kyoto Protocols controls the producers to develop, supply and use of environmentally hazardous gasses worldwide. Hence, promote global sustainable for upcoming generations. This paper is highlighting the reasons gas type fire extinguishing agents extensively used substituting conventional methods against fire. The fundamental equations of Ozone Depleting Potential and Global Warming Potential were properly discussed to show how severe these gasses exposed to the environment. The effectiveness of these gases as a clean agent in extinguishing the fire may convince prospect users to carry out the decision of changes. Potential extinguishing agents will be deliberated to investigate their needs as new fire suppression agents. It will be then to be suggested and recommended for further studies.
Quality improvements are implemented through various systems, techniques and tools in a company. The implementation of quality initiatives are commonplace in large companies rather than the smaller ones. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are usually constrained by their size, expertise and financial resources. Nevertheless, it is important for them to improve their quality of physical work setting and working environment to sustain a competitive advantage. 5S is one of the most widely adopted techniques for industrial housekeeping and, in improving the quality of workplace environment. Since the cost of the development and implementation is one of the main constraints for 5S program at workplace in SMEs, the sustainable design concept shall be adopted. As the main part of the research work, a conceptual model of continuous improvement initiative for quality working environment within small and medium-sized manufacturing companies was developed and proposed. The focus of this research study is on the aspect of how to implement the 5S practices by incorporating sustainable design for improving a quality workplace environment and reducing the environmental impacts through a comprehensive approach. Finally, conclusions are drawn and suggestions made for further research in SME companies.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
