As doenças cardiovasculares (DCV), segundo a Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia (SBC), são a principal causa de mortalidade no mundo, além de ocasionar aumento da morbidade, mortalidade prematura, incapacidades, perda da qualidade de vida e dos custos diretos e indiretos à saúde. No Brasil, índices alarmantes de hipertensão arterial atingem uma a cada cinco pessoas e o número de hipertensos só aumentam, de acordo com a SBC. Isso se deve a diversas causas, dentre as principais detectadas, nutrição inadequada e sedentarismo, consequências da vida contemporânea e de maus hábitos de saúde presentes na sociedade. No nosso país, hipertensão é a principal causa de morte, mas mesmo assim, segue sendo a doença mais prevalente. OBJETIVOS: Comparar índices oficiais brasileiros com dados do nosso grupo de pesquisa; orientar a população sobre saúde cardiovascular; promoção da saúde cardiovascular. METODOLOGIA: Foi realizado um levantamento de campo de abordagem quantitativa, na cidade de Foz do Iguaçu/Paraná, durante a feira comercial da JK, CEP 85851-320, onde foram avaliados os índices de pressão arterial, frequência cardíaca, glicemia capilar e Índice de Massa Corporal em uma amostragem de cerca de 100 pessoas que participaram voluntariamente de maneira anônima. Os parâmetros foram embasados em revisão de literatura e dados nacionais de saúde dos últimos dois anos. RESULTADOS: Na análise de dados que obtivemos, mais de um quinto das pessoas apresentou-se hipertensa, a maioria desse grupo também apresentou hiperglicemia. Quanto à alteração no IMC, foi mais expressiva; cerca de um terço estava com o índice acima do normal. Muitas pessoas relataram também o abandono do tratamento de doenças já diagnosticadas e falta de comparecimento às consultas de rotina. CONCLUSÃO: Hipertensão arterial é uma doença crônica silenciosa e causa diversos danos à saúde do indivíduo. Fomentar a detecção precoce e contribuir para a prevenção também é papel do jovem médico. Por meio da nossa pesquisa de campo, foi possível concluir que a prevalência brasileira da doença hipertensiva é semelhante à apresentada no grupo voluntário. Os benefícios do seguimento do tratamento medicamentoso da hipertensão e diabetes superam os riscos, portanto, é relevante reiterar a importância do controle periódico da saúde cardiovascular.
