Objective: To establish the prevalence of high blood pressure and associated factors among schoolchildren from Caxias do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methods:This school-based cross-sectional study assessed boys and girls aged 7 to 12 years from private and public schools. Three measurements of the children's blood pressure were taken during one visit to the schools. Weight, height, and waist circumference were measured. We also assessed the children's aerobic capacity (9-minute running test) and socioeconomic status. Statistical analysis was carried out using the chi-square test and logistic regression in order to control for confounding factors. Results:The sample included 1,413 children. Prevalence of schoolchildren with high blood pressure was 13.8% (systolic, diastolic, systolic/diastolic), and the proportion was higher (double) for obese and/or overweight children in comparison to normal-weight children. Children with increased waist circumference had 2.8 times greater chance of having high blood pressure levels than those with appropriate waist circumference (95% confidence interval 2.513-3.186 and p = 0.000). Individuals belonging to a high social class, defined according to the Brazilian National Economic Index, had 2.6 times greater chance of having high blood pressure. Conclusions:In the present study, schoolchildren aged 7 to 12 years from Caxias do Sul had high prevalence of high blood pressure levels; increased waist circumference, high socioeconomic status, and low physical capacity were associated with this condition. We suggest that measures be taken to promote the practice of physical activity and dietary control to improve blood pressure levels and thus reduce risk factors. Resultados: Participaram do estudo 1.413 crianças.

A cross-sectional study was conducted and 1,442 children were evaluated regarding body weight and height. Obesity was defined based on BMI for gender and age. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were carried out between the independent variables and outcome. The prevalence of obesity and overweight was ) and 19.9% , respectively. Aerobic fitness (p<0.000, PR=0.59), PR=1.41), sedentary habits (TV, video games and computer) (p=0.004, PR=1.50), and high socioeconomic level (p<0.000, PR=2.64) . Abstract -The prevalence of obesity and overweight has been increasing worldwide over the last few years. The prevalence of body image insatisfaction in this population was high and should be a matter of concern to health professionals.
Objective: To verify the prevalence of trunk postural deviations (lumbar hyperlordosis, dorsal kyphosis, and scoliosis) in scholars aged eight to 15 years-old from the city schools of Caxias do Sul, Southern Brazil.Method: A total of 864 students were evaluated in a crosssectional study. The variables studied were trunk postural rating by visual inspection; body mass index (weight and height); backpack weight on digital scale and how students used to carry the school supplies (questionnaire); gender; and age. Descriptive and bivariate statistics (prevalence ratio and confidence interval) were applied. Results: The prevalence of postural deviations was 16.6% for dorsal kyphosis, 27.9% for lumbar hyperlordosis, and 33.2% for scoliosis. The ages of eight to 12 years-old were a risk factor for lumbar hyperlordosis, tripling the chances of this outcome (3.41 prevalence ratio). The same age was a protective factor for dorsal kyphosis. Scholars of this age group presented 52% less chances for dorsal kyphosis. The female gender had 47% less chances of having dorsal kyphosis than males. Scoliotic attitude did not show significant association with the independent variables. Conclusions: These findings confirm the need for interventions by health and education professionals, seeking to correct bad postural habits, which could in the future cause irreversible damages.Key-words: school health; adolescent health; spine; posture.
OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study was to explore the factors associated with inadequate chewing in an adult and elderly population of a city in the southern region of Brazil.METHODS:This was a cross-sectional study based on a population home-based inquiry (DCH-POP) in southern Brazil. Individuals were interviewed by trained interviewers to create a standardized procedure. In a pilot study, the Questionnaire of Human Communication Disorders (DCH-POP) was created and validated to identify self-reported speech and language, swallowing and hearing disorders. The outcome was dichotomized into either having adequate chewing or not, as assessed by a series of questions about chewing ability. Analyses of absolute and relative frequencies were measured according to the studied variables. A Poisson regression was applied at a significance level of 5%.RESULTS:A total of 1,246 people were interviewed. Inadequate chewing was found in 52 (5.6%) individuals, with a higher prevalence in the elderly (11.8%) than in adults (5.2%). In the final model, the following factors were associated with inadequate chewing: being 61 years of age or older (prevalence ratio or PR=9.03; 95% CI: 1.20-67.91), loss of teeth and use of unadjusted prosthesis (PR=3.50; 95% CI: 1.54-7.95), preference for foods of soft consistency (PR=9.34; 95% CI:4.66-8.70) and difficulty in nasal breathing (PR=2.82; 95% CI: 1.31-6.06).CONCLUSION:Age, oral health status through dental prosthesis, preference for foods of soft consistency and difficulty breathing through the nose were factors associated with chewing inability in adults and the elderly.
Institutionalised older persons with a poor oral health condition are associated with a higher prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia, as well as with the presence of Xerostomia.
