The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sources and rates of organic waste and their interaction on the growth of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit, in the Southeast region of Piauí State. The treatments consisted of two sources (Copernicia prunifera (Mill.) H.E. palm residue and plant compound) and six organic waste rates. The study was conducted in the period of March-June 2011 and the following parameters were evaluated: stem diameter, height, number of leaves, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total dry matter, root volume, shoot dry weight/root dry weight ratio, height/stem diameter ratio and the Dickson Quality Index. The Copernicia prunifera (Mill.) H.E. palm residue and plant compound showed a great potential to be used in the manufacture of substrates for the production of seedlings Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit, since their initial development was influenced by the sources and proportions of these organic residues and by the interaction between these treatments. The substrate containing 50% of plant compound produced better quality of plants of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit in their initial development stage.
. Plant cover of millet and brachiaria promoted an increase in soil pH and reductions in amounts of Al 3+ and in saturation by Al 3+ , in relation to the area with native Cerrado. Major amounts of residue were verified on soil surface under native cerrado, due to greater input of plant residue and lower decomposition rate. Amounts of nutrients and levels of organic matter were higher in areas under millet and brachiaria cover, mainly in 0-0.10 e 0.10-0.20 m. depths. Brachiaria and millet cover plants were similar in relation to alterations promoted in chemical attributes of soil. Palavras-chave: Adubação, calagem, composto de lixo urbano, leguminosa Substrates for Trema micrantha (L.) Blumes seedlings growth ABSTRACTThis study aimed at assessing the effects of solid urban waste and liming in the initial growth of Trema micrantha (L. Ulmaceae) seedlings in tubes. To conduct the study, an experiment was installed in a greenhouse, displayed in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme 2x5, in samples of Red Distroferric Latossol (Oxisol) with and without liming and five proportions of urban waste compost: 0; 10; 20; 40 and 80% v/v, without complementary fertilization, with five replications. 120 days after the beginning of the experiment, the seedlings were collected to determine: shoot dry matter, root dry matter and total dry matter, as well as the relation between shoot dry matter and root dry matter. There was no significant effect of lime nor its interaction with waste compost in the parameters evaluated. Waste compost increased seedlings shoot dry matter production. Such effects varied according to the proportions of compost used. The average proportion was 54.7% of solid urban waste and 45.3% of Red Distroferric Latossol (Oxisol), which favors dry matter production of Trema micrantha (L. Ulmaceae) seedlings.

Physical and chemical attributes of an Oxisoil cultivated with cowpea bean under different irrigation systems ABSTRACTAgricultural land use in irrigated areas, using management techniques of low sustainability, can promote changes in the physical and chemical soil properties, with negative effects on crop productivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the chemical and physical properties of an Oxsoil cultivated with cowpea bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp], under two irrigation systems, at Gurgueia Irrigated Perimeter, municipality of Alvorada do Gurguéia, Piauí State -Brazil. Treatments consisted of two irrigation systems (an area with a history of central pivot irrigation and the other with sprinkler irrigation), an additional area with native vegetation, for comparison purposes, and four depths. Irrigated areas showed changes in the soil fertility conditions in relation to the native forest area, with increased values of bases sum, effective and potential cations exchange capacity and saturation per bases. Differences in the soil physical conditions were observed in both irrigated areas in comparison to the native forest, and were more accentuated in the area irrigated by center pivot.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of artificial defoliation on vegetative and productive stages of cowpea inoculated with diazotrophic bacteria, in two experiments. The first experiment was performed in a greenhouse with 5 × 5 factorial (five defoliation percentages and five N sources), with four repetitions. N sources consisted of bacterial inoculation with strains INPA 03-11B, UFLA 03-84, UFRB FA34C2-2, and two control treatments: i - with N fertilization and ii - blank control, without N fertilization and without inoculation. The second experiment was performed in the field, in a 3 × 5 factorial scheme, with three repetitions. Treatments consisted of three N sources: with N fertilization, with bacterial strain INPA 03-11B that was selected in the first experiment, and five percentages of artificial defoliation. Defoliation percentages for both experiments were 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%. Artificial defoliation during the vegetative stage caused reduction in the dry mass of bacterial nodules. Inoculation increased plant tolerance to defoliation and enhanced grain nutrient concentration (N and P). Inoculation with the strain INPA 03-11B allowed cowpea plants to tolerate 50% defoliation in the vegetative stage. The mean productivity of cowpea was reduced under > 50% defoliation during the productive stage; therefore, control of defoliating pests until the productive stage is not necessary under field conditions.
