Esse trabalho analisa o debate em torno do que ficou cunhado na literatura como 'microfundamentos da macroeconomia', e tem como objetivo discutir tanto as críticas ao modo como eles são propostos pela teoria econômica mainstream quanto visões alternativas da conexão entre o micro e o macro. Apesar de existir atualmente um 'novo consenso em macroeconomia', a sua estratégia de microfundamentação baseada no agente representativo é alvo de inúmeras críticas, por apresentar diversos problemas de agregação e ignorar a importância das interações entre os agentes e dos mecanismos de influência do macro sobre o micro. Estes são dois aspectos que estão no centro de diversas propostas alternativas de conexão entre a microeconomia e a macroeconomia, e que muitas vezes são expressos por meio do conceito de emergência. Embora esse seja um conceito mal especificado no debate econômico, em várias abordagenscomo será defendido aqui -, ele é utilizado representando justamente estes dois aspectos. Dentre essas abordagens, é destacada nessa dissertação a da economia da complexidade, que enxerga a economia enquanto um sistema complexo adaptativo e propõe a sua análise a partir entre outros métodosde modelos baseados em agentes (ABMs). Estes possibilitariam o estudo das interações e feedbacks existentes no sistema econômico a partir do exame tanto das regras de comportamento dos agentes quanto das redes de conexão entre eles. Assim, tais modelos seriam capazes de analisar os principais mecanismos de influências causais existentes entre a microeconomia e a macroeconomia, considerando uma relação dinâmica e continua entre esses dois domínios. Será discutido nesse trabalho, também, como a análise de tais mecanismos de influência constitui um modo de explicação adequado dos fenômenos em ciências sociaiso que é referido no debate como 'explicação baseada em mecanismos'. A partir disso, conclui-se que microfundamentar a macroeconomia consistiria em explicar os mecanismos de influência das interações entre os agentes microeconômicos sobre as estruturas macroeconômicas, porém, levando-se em conta, também, os diversos outros mecanismos em ação e a forma dinâmica como os mecanismos nos diversos níveis se relacionam.
