No molde da máquina de lingotamento inicia-se a formação de uma pele sólida que sustentará o núcleo líquido ao longo da máquina. O rompimento dessa pele (breakout) representa um dos maiores problemas no lingotamento contínuo por vazar o aço líquido no interior do veio. Essa ocorrência oferece risco às pessoas, interrompe o veio, sucateia produto, danifica e indisponibiliza o equipamento momentaneamente. Para evitar tal evento, o sistema de detecção de rompimento de pele reduz a velocidade de lingotamento quando certos critérios de variação de temperatura no interior do molde são atendidos. Dependendo da sensibilidade, o sistema pode atuar desnecessariamente reduzindo a velocidade sem que haja risco de breakout, caracterizando alarmes falsos. Na Usiminas, a lógica de canto apresentava inúmeros alarmes falsos, que geravam reprogramação do comprimento de placa e sucateamento de material afetado pelo duplo lingotamento. Com a atualização dos parâmetros do alarme de canto foi possível reduzir o número de alarmes em 80,3% e evitar o sucateamento de aproximadamente 105 toneladas de aço por mês, sem perda de eficiência na detecção dos alarmes verdadeiros.
