En 2005, surgió en El Salvador un movimiento social opuesto a las exploraciones de oro y metales asociados. Una de sus características ha sido su composición multisectorial, al estar liderado por organizaciones comunales, ONG de desarrollo rural, grupos ambientalistas, sectores de la Iglesia católica, entre otros. Tal diversidad da cuenta del desarrollo del socioambientalismo, es decir, de la convergencia entre una crítica distributiva, de la cual son portadores los movimientos sociales por la justicia social, y una crítica ecológica, desplegada por el movimiento ecologista.

Este artículo se enfoca en las organizaciones de la sociedad civil que han tomado parte en distintas acciones de protección del ambiente y de la naturaleza luego de la firma de los Acuerdos de Paz. La diversidad de actores que participan en dichas acciones se comprende mejor si se entiende al ambientalismo como una esfera de sujetos, prácticas y discursos donde no todos son ambientalistas. Son ocho los tipos de actores colectivos que toman parte en dicha esfera. Destacan, entre ellos, las organizaciones de base movilizadas ante situaciones de conflicto ambiental. Las prácticas y enfoques de los distintos actores dan lugar a cuatro proyectos o procesos de cambio socioambiental: ambientalismo crítico, conservacionismo moderado, desarrollo de medios de vida sostenibles y reforma ambiental capitalista.
