This is the introductory chapter of a review collection on integrability in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the collection we present an overview of the achievements and the status of this subject as of the year 2010.arXiv:1012.3982v5 [hep-th] PrefaceSince late 2002 tremendous and rapid progress has been made in exploring planar N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory and free IIB superstrings on the AdS 5 × S 5 background. These two models are claimed to be exactly dual by the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the novel results give full support to the duality. The key to this progress lies in the integrability of the free/planar sector of the AdS/CFT pair of models. Many reviews of integrability in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence are available in the literature. They cover selected branches of the subject which have appeared over the years. Still it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain an overview of the entire subject, even for experts. Already for several years there has been a clear demand for an up-to-date review to present a global view and summary of the subject, its motivation, techniques, results and implications.Such a review appears to be a daunting task: With around 8 years of development and perhaps up to 1000 scientific articles written, the preparation would represent a major burden on the prospective authors. Therefore, our idea was to prepare a coordinated review collection to fill the gap of a missing global review for AdS/CFT integrability. Coordination consisted in carefully splitting up the subject into a number of coherent topics. These cover most aspects of the subject without overlapping too much. Each topic is reviewed by someone who has made important contributions to it. The collection is aimed at beginning students and at scientists working on different subjects, but also at experts who would like to (re)acquire an overview. Special care was taken to keep the chapters brief (around 20 pages), focused and self-contained in order to enable the interested reader to absorb a selected topic in one go.As the individual chapters will not convey an overview of the subject as a whole, the purpose of the introductory chapter is to assemble the pieces of the puzzle into a bigger picture. It consists of two parts: The first part is a general review of AdS/CFT integrability. It concentrates on setting the scene, outlining the achievements and putting them into context. It tries to provide a qualitative understanding of what integrability is good for and how and why it works. The second part maps out how the topics/chapters fit together and make up the subject. It also contains sketches of the contents of each chapter. This part helps the reader in identifying the chapters (s)he is most interested in.There are reasons for and against combining all the contributions into one article or book. Practical issues however make it advisable to have the chapters appear as autonomous review articles. After all, they are the works of individuals. They are merely tied together by the...
Attempts to solve Yang-Mills theory must eventually face the problem of analyzing the theory at intermediate values of the coupling constant. In this regime neither perturbation theory nor the gravity dual are adequate, and one must consider the full string theory in the appropriate background. We suggest that in some nontrivial cases the world sheet theory may be exactly solvable. For the Green-Schwarz superstring on AdS 5 × S 5 we find an infinite set of nonlocal classically conserved charges, of the type that exist in integrable field theories.
We present the amplitude for classical scattering of gravitationally interacting massive scalars at third post-Minkowskian order. Our approach harnesses powerful tools from the modern amplitudes program such as generalized unitarity and the double-copy construction, which relates gravity integrands to simpler gauge-theory expressions. Adapting methods for integration and matching from effective field theory, we extract the conservative Hamiltonian for compact spinless binaries at third post-Minkowskian order. The resulting Hamiltonian is in complete agreement with corresponding terms in state-of-the-art expressions at fourth post-Newtonian order as well as the probe limit at all orders in velocity. We also derive the scattering angle at third post-Minkowskian order.Introduction. The recent discovery of gravitational waves at LIGO/Virgo [1] has launched an extraordinary new era in multi-messenger astronomy. Given expected improvements in detector sensitivity, high-precision theoretical predictions from general relativity will be crucial. Existing theory benchmarks come from a variety of approaches (see also Ref. [2] and references therein), including the effective one-body formalism [3], numerical relativity [4], the self-force formalism [5], and perturbative analysis using post-Newtonian (PN) [6-9], post-Minkowskian (PM) [10][11][12], and effective field theory (EFT) [13] methods.
We describe a systematic framework for computing the conservative potential of a compact binary system using modern tools from scattering amplitudes and effective field theory. Our approach combines methods for integration and matching adapted from effective field theory, generalized unitarity, and the double-copy construction, which relates gravity integrands to simpler gauge-theory expressions. With these methods we derive the third post-Minkowskian correction to the conservative two-body Hamiltonian for spinless black holes. We describe in some detail various checks of our integration methods and the resulting Hamiltonian.
We give a representation of the parity-even part of the planar two-loop six-gluon maximally helicity violating (MHV) amplitude of N ¼ 4 super-Yang-Mills theory, in terms of loop-momentum integrals with simple dual conformal properties. We evaluate the integrals numerically in order to test directly the Anastasiou-Bern-Dixon-Kosower/Bern-Dixon-Smirnov all-loop ansatz for planar MHV amplitudes. We find that the ansatz requires an additive remainder function, in accord with previous indications from strong-coupling and Regge limits. The planar six-gluon amplitude can also be compared with the hexagonal Wilson loop computed by Drummond, Henn, Korchemsky, and Sokatchev in arXiv:0803.1466. After accounting for differing singularities and other constants independent of the kinematics, we find that the Wilson loop and MHV-amplitude remainders are identical, to within our numerical precision. This result provides nontrivial confirmation of a proposed n-point equivalence between Wilson loops and planar MHV amplitudes, and suggests that an additional mechanism besides dual conformal symmetry fixes their form at six points and beyond.
In this note we further investigate the procedure for computing tree-level amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory from connected instantons in the B-model on P 3|4 , emphasizing that the problem of calculating Feynman diagrams is recast into the problem of finding solutions to a certain set of algebraic equations. We show that the B-model correctly reproduces all 6-particle non-MHV amplitudes. As a further check, we also show that n-particle amplitudes obtained from the B-model obey a number of properties required of gauge theory, such as having the correct soft and collinear gluon poles.
We analyze in detail the relation between an exactly marginal deformation of N = 4 SYM -the Leigh-Strassler or "β-deformation" -and its string theory dual (recently constructed in hep-th/0502086) by comparing energies of semiclassical strings to anomalous dimensions of gauge-theory operators in the two-scalar sector. We stress the existence of integrable structures on the two sides of the duality. In particular, we argue that the integrability of strings in AdS 5 × S 5 implies the integrability of the deformed world sheet theory with real deformation parameter. We compare the fast string limit of the worldsheet action in the sector with two angular momenta with the continuum limit of the coherent state action of an anisotropic XXZ spin chain describing the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the corresponding operators and find a remarkable agreement for all values of the deformation parameter. We discuss some of the properties of the Bethe Ansatz for this spin chain, solve the Bethe equations for small number of excitations and comment on higher loop properties of the dilatation operator. With the goal of going beyond the leading order in the 't Hooft expansion we derive the analog of the Bethe equations on the string-theory side, and show that they coincide with the thermodynamic limit of the Bethe equations for the spin chain. We also compute the 1/J corrections to the anomalous dimensions of operators with large R-charge (corresponding to strings with angular momentum J) and match them to the 1-loop corrections to the fast string energies. Our results suggest that the impressive agreement between the gauge theory and semiclassical strings in AdS 5 × S 5 is part of a larger picture underlying the gauge/gravity duality.
It was recently shown that the string theory duals of certain deformations of the N = 4 gauge theory can be obtained by a combination of T-duality transformations and coordinate shifts. Here we work out the corresponding procedure of twisting the dual integrable spin chain and its Bethe ansatz. We derive the Bethe equations for the complete twisted N = 4 gauge theory at one and higher loops. These have a natural generalization which we identify as twists involving the Cartan generators of the conformal algebra. The underlying model appears to be a form of noncommutative deformation of N = 4 SYM.
